I have thought about this for a few days, I know that my wife is very comfortable with the current aides that come in daily, that is what makes this hard. I would encourage anyone looking at Hospice to ask some hard questions before choosing. Here are some of my questions
1. What steps are in place to keep druggies out of the organization? They deal with controlled substances and people from all walks of life can have drug issues. 10% of Doctors and Nurses do have addiction issues.
2. When you call at 3:00 am in the morning with a crisis in your home, does the on call nurse have the medical records in front of her, or do you have to tell her the medical history before you can get any information about what to do.
3. Do you have your own Doctors or do you have just part time help?
4. Where does respite take place? In the home, in a nursing home, in your own facility?
moorsb, it is ashame you have to make such a hard decision. You have done the best you can and now you are making a great decision again. We never know what we are getting when we invite help into our home. You are being a great advocate for your wife. Praying that you will find comfort and a better Hospice group than before.
I am now at Baylor Vitas Hospice with my wife in downtown Fort Worth. They wanted to admit her and get her drugs worked out. Now a Doctor will see her everyday for a few days and then send her back home. She had another TIA and is having trouble swallowing again. I was very impressed with the speed they came and got her, an hour after signing the papers to trans hospice.
