I've been wondering if some of us have interesting stories about the origin of our screen names. Mine is boring--my name and state sort of rhyme, so that's the explanation. I know Divvi said hers has something to do with the word divine, and I was wondering if Weejun is named after the loafers? Anyone want to share?
briegull comes from a gull eating brie cheese on Monhegan in the early 80s. A friend made a little "welcome" booklet for the island, was 80 and wanted to get rid of it, so I took it over, gradually changed it over the years but it still exists; it now is on the web as monheganwelcome.com . She called herself the "grey gull of Monhegan" and since I had this picture of the gull jumping up for brie cheese (see briegull.com) I said, okay, i'm the brie gull. I've used it ever since on the internet. It's sufficiently anonymous, but not too hard to remember. Every year I go up to the little cemetery and say hello to the Grey Gull.
On Facebook, it turns out there are actually two people named Breegull. Not spelled the same, but that's as close as I've seen it.
Oh I love blood and guts. How I miss my 24 hr shifts on the ambulance in the inner city. All the shootings, stabbings, overdoses, 16 yr olds having their 6th babies, codes in the gutters, life was good back then. I was in my element.
MY TURN!! As you all know, I've always been very involved with my sport...training and showing Hunter/Jumpers. Over the years, I've had several very bad "accidents" involving my "extreme sport" as my insurance company describes it. I've broken most every bone in my body over my 50 years of riding....my last fox-hunting experience was almost tragic...the EMT's said they "lost" me twice in the Air-Evac. All the ribs on my left side were "shattered" into pieces, lungs punctured, hole in my Aorta, broken back and neck, broken scapula and collar bones, broken pelvis. Needless to say, I got a lot of attention from the hunt club and all my horseshow buddies....They put a handmade sign on my I.C.U. door below my name that read, "Stunt Girl...I do all my own stunts". It stuck. I even got a T-shirt later that had my new nickname on it!
It wasn't hard to come up with but when my daughter shared an identity to me to get me started on the computer (e-mail), every choice I tried to enter was refused, or I refused to be _______________26495. Finally, like 23 choices later one variation stuck. Carosi was a reject, but works just fine in other places, like here. It's a combination of the first 2 letters of my first name, DH's first name and our last name. Some time ago, concern was expressed on how public our info from here was. I Googled Carosi, and went through the first 12 pages and I wasn't there. Lots of entries for Restaurants (Italian?).
My name came from always being asked how to spell my name. You would think that Frank is pretty easy to spell, yet people still asked is that F R A N K... I got phrustrated and finally spelled it phranque. It is phunny, phoolish, phrench in origin (Francois), and phinally phrustrating. I also used it when filling out phorms, since I would also immediately know that anything addressed to phranque would be junk mail...To this day, I can tell when a mailing list is sold, because the mail comes in with phranque, and goes directly to the trash can. Phrustrating, but lots of phun.
Oh, Phranque, I loved your narrative. Reminded me of a game my late Daddy and I would play. We got stuck on Gnu. Somehow I gnu we would, Happy Gnu Year, you gnu better than try that...
Weejun is because I'm Norwegian and in the early/mid 60's when I was a teenager Bass Weejuns were the shoes we wore.
My real first name is a star name. In my tiny ethnic group sun, moon, and star names are very common, but I got an unusual version. Starling is also a star name.
Oh, Yeah, Starling and MarilyninMD.....I remember, too! And remember the shirt-waist dresses we wore...Johnathan something was the brand name...don't remember. Everything had to have "that brand" on it!
It seems that everywhere I worked, there was another Nancy - and she would have been there the longest. I was Nancy Becker then, so, I was called "Nancy Bee". I still have friends who call me Nancy Bee. Nothing too exciting about that name either. Speaking of fashions, I was a teen in the 50's and absolutely LOVED Lanz dresses. All cotton prints with tiny heart shaped buttons and tight belts to show off our 22 inch waists. Lanz dresses usually had full skirts (with countless petticoats beneath). Sandra Dee also wore Lanz dresses. Very much the "sweet girl" look. hahahah.
Well, I just used my first name.....I didn't realize we should have a nickname! I never had one growing up, and after marriage and children, I was known as "___'s" mom; and now "Granny" -- For a while here I added "Red" for my hair color since there are over 7 Marys here...though they have to add numbers or other letters to their name, since I got "Mary" first....
Oh, my, and American Girl? Remember the New Look? actually, if you have a scanner, old pictures of us in 50s clothes would be fun to look at on Facebook!
I decided to use my first name here. Other places I use boxtop - a childhood nickname since my last name was Box. I also use all4evrhis meaning I am forever Jesus'. Another is sheba516 - sheba was our dog and 516 is our anniversary.
One thing I love is purple snu, And snu I love on fritters, A pinch of snu in onion stew, Is just the thing for jitters, So when I'm asked what's snu, I say, "Oh nothing -- what's snu with you?
Oh, and about the Gourdchipper screen name, well chip carving gourds with a hand-held gouge used to be my hobby/avocation before we embarked on this AD journey, and I'd used that on other message boards for years before joining this Spouse forum.
Well...Grannywhiskers was developed for my cancer. After my Chemo, I was thrown into instant menopause. After the chemo I would say that I had one harmone left and it spent all its time growing three whiskers on my chin and my grandkids wouls say , "Look ...Granny's got whiskers!) Thus, my name.
So creative. Wow. Anyway, mine is my first name and date of birth. When I first registered, I used a different name but somehow it got screwed up and I just had to reregister. Not very creative is it? Oh well. I love the stories though. A little light reading before bed is always good.
Hi Kathryn0907, great minds think alike. Mine is my first name and birth date to--but I was dumb enough to put the year in so everyone now knows how old I am.
I am Bama because I am a big football fan of Alabama. At one time I used mommagrace because that is what the grandkids call me. I thought i would get a younger sounding name. The problem is that everybody knows I am older than dirt. For a long time I was the only one listed in the eightys on Ages of the Caregivers.
We had a cat for 17 years called Ewok because when a kitten he looked like a little ewok from Star Wars. When my granddaughters were very young they called me Grandma Ewok to differentiate me from their other grandma. The name stuck and they still call me Grandma Ewok....Thus gmaewok.
my first and middle name, i go by the middle name, i was so frazlled when I found this site I couldn`t think of any name so here it is, now that i think of it I should have used what ever I always say that.
Just used my first name. It is not Victoria - just Vickie. When in grammar school one teacher tried to call me Victoria all the time - I just wouldn't answer her and got sent to the principal''s office. My Mom had to go to school and get it straightened out!
There is a built in nickname for Mary. It is Polly. Don't ask me why, but it is the same as some other nicknames that the English built in. Like Bill for William. Makes no sense to our ears but must have meant something to them way back when.
Star, I had never heard that nickname for Mary. Think I'll do some research and find out the orgination of it. While I'm looking, I'll see if I can find a list Mary.
our family is always picking on each other. My oldest son started calling me mammiejammie on day and it stuck. I asked him where he got that name and he said it was just a southern twist on mama...... and that I was his number one, hence, mammiejammie1. That was about 28 years ago and it stuck. Now it is not uncommon for me to use that a lot. The kids still use it to pick on me.... gotta love them !!!!
Ok, my turn...I am who I am...Natalie's mom...she is my only child -- the only one I gave birth to & I love her dearly...it's funny how you can love someone so darn much that you can't even come up with a good name for yourself other than "Nat's mom"...oh well...I love what I love...she just turned 25! I'm almost doubled her age...hint hint. ;)
