Good Afternoon. Today I received a call that today was chicken liver special day at a little country "greasy spoon" so I made the 10 mile trip for 3 orders of chicken livers with onions only. This evening I invited daughter and SIL and we are going to feast. There will be grilled chicken breast for those wanting them. This is a no no for me with cholestral meds but I still do it occasionally. Gotta have a life sometime. I bet there are other chickenliver lovers out there!!!!!
Mawzy and New Realm - you must not have the cloud cover we have had in the Vancouver area. The days have been warm but not as warm as yours. And - yes, no rain at this time of year is rare. This is the first year in many that there has not been rain for the Rose Festival.
Jean21 For back pain - try Valerian Root. It helps relax the nerves. I use it for my back. When hb was in an accident years ago and got whiplash, I gave it to him that night and the next morning he had no pain.
Jimmy - now I know I come by my cast iron stomach honestly. I am Scotch-Irish:temper and frugal. I do have some English unfortunately as Queen Victoria is a distant cousin.
Today is Art's day to volunteer at our church so he leaves at 6:30am - the only morning he can get up before 10!! I always have these plans to get up and do things like bike ride or go for a walk or have a good cry. When the day comes, my ambitions are gone. Oh well. I slept in due to waking up with sinus headache (this overcast, muggy weather), then watched TV until noon, had a Costco muffin then burritos. Now I am reading her. Maybe I will get out and do something yet when I get done here. But, I do enjoy not having him here - it is quiet.
I guess we can tell who the southerners are..... chicken liver lovers.....
maybe there should be a new thread -- "what food do you like that most people think is disgusting?" we've got a good start, between the haggis and the chicken livers... LOL
I just pulled this off of the web for you - Haggis Recipe
1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available) 1 sheep's stomach 1 sheep heart 1 sheep liver 1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred) 3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!) 3 onions, finely chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 3/4 cup stock Wash lungs and stomach well, rub with salt and rinse. Remove membranes and excess fat. Soak in cold salted water for several hours. Turn stomach inside out for stuffing. Cover heart and liver with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Chop heart and coarsely grate liver. Toast oatmeal in a skillet on top of the stove, stirring frequently, until golden. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Loosely pack mixture into stomach, about two-thirds full. Remember, oatmeal expands in cooking.
Press any air out of stomach and truss securely. Put into boiling water to cover. Simmer for 3 hours, uncovered, adding more water as needed to maintain water level. Prick stomach several times with a sharp needle when it begins to swell; this keeps the bag from bursting. Place on a hot platter, removing trussing strings. Serve with a spoon. Ceremoniously served with "neeps, tatties and nips" -- mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, nips of whiskey.
I was watching some program not long ago and they were making that - didn't know what it was called. Sorry - my stomach can stand a lot, but unless I was on Fear Factor or Amazing Race I would not try it.
Haggis is a Scottish main course stuffed into a lamb's stomach that is made with oatmeal, lamb's lungs and various other assorted lamb parts. They use every thing but the baa. You can't use those ingredients here in the US, most of the haggis made here in the US uses lamb but not all of those various stray parts.
There are some variations made here in the US that use beef and pork or a combination of all three meats. Some chef's have their own variations, some of which are quite good. If you are still curious about the ingredients or want the receipe, google is your friend. You can also buy canned haggis.
edited: Mary good job, I might add it is served with great pomp and ceremony, piped in by the piper and followed by an fully dressed honor guard dressed in highland regalia. Google "Burns Supper" and you will find some pictures of the ceremony. The whisky is for the chef. Robert Burns wrote a poem about haggis.
Haggis ----OMG------You actually EAT that?????????? I used to love fried pork brains and even that doesn't sound appealing anymore....Does anybody sell that anymore???? Oh, I have to add this. At our County Fair one year a lady entered a personal story in a contest and she told how when she was a child a favorite treat for her and her cousins was.......fried chicken feet.......First time I ever heard of that. True story.
Imohr, my Dad was a minister and almost every Sunday we would be invited to a member's house for Sunday dinner. One lady ALWAYS fried chicken feet! I never ate them, she said they were only for my Dad! He choked them down and tried to be a good sport about it. Makes me sick to the stomach thinking of it!
I ate chicken feet at a Chinese restaurant (in Boston) once but was not impressed. Gelatinous. I love chicken livers, though. Did you ever use one of those flat grill baskets, line it with bacon, both sides, then put chicken livers on one side, close it up and cook on the barbecue slowly. It is marvelous. Of course forbidden in these days..
I'm getting a day off tomorrow.. going up to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and meeting a friend from the west coast there for lunch. Should be fun!
when i lived out of the country my chihuahuas BEST treat was boiled chicken feet from the market...haha// plus ALL the spanish speaking nations use it in chicken stock as it is the most aromatic part for chicken stock! gross but humdinger of a broth for any soup. divvi forget the haggis.
Charlotte, We had higher clouds yesterday than the day before (Tues). On Tues. I saw about 8 drops of rain on my windshield and nothing more. Now today, I too woke with a headache. I get that way with humidity. Breathing is harder, like something sitting on my chest, and I feel a weight on my head even when I am able to get past the headache. Been that way since I was 12, and people thought I was nuts, that weather related pains and heaviness were a myth. We have alot more cloudiness today.
Just checking in. I just treated myself to a paint job in my computer room. i painted it a light and bright terra cotta color and it just makes me happy to look at it. I put my important thing on the wasll and I'm so satisfied. It's a good thing because it might be a month before I get the paint off my fingers. LOL. Well it was quite a job, but I'm happy with it. DH was sleeping the whole time, didn't even know I was painting, and this morning I showed him the room, and he thought it was always this color (it was blue, since we moved here, 10 yrs ago) Oh well.
Briegull you will only be three hours from me when you are in Boston! Oh how I wish we could meet. The museum is incredible. I totally blew the budget and made reservations for Jim and I to go to the Indian Head Resort in the White Mountains in NH. We love it there. It is gorgeous. The food is fabulous. We have reserved a little cabin with a screened in porch, very secluded. He loves pools and wants to go. Please pray that he will make it through the weekend. I am excited but a bit anxious. I will watch carefully for signs of stress. I'll post on Sunday nite. Have a great weekend all. Yes Marsh, you are right about Norway!
I spent most of the morning on the phone with U Verse support trying to get my stupid wireless connection to work. They were finally able to get it going, so hopefully I can do stuff here on the laptop while DW sits on the couch rather than having to be in the office away from her. I hate to leave her sitting alone all the time. Bad enough when I'm cleaning up the dishes, and other tasks around the house.
Hi all, it is almost 7:00 at night here and I missed another glorious day outside while at work. That munching that you have all been hearing is me working on the books that I got Tuesday. It is vampire week and Laurell K. Hamilton and Mary Janice Davidson have new ones out. I finished Skin Trade yesterday (I enjoyed it so much I couldn't put it down). Hopefuly tonight I will get to start on Undead and Unwelcome. Started the week off with Nora Robers Carnel Innocence and enjoyed that one too..... The munching comment comes from my DH who always used to say I didn't read books, just inhaled them.
Love my green tea (Twinnings Green Tea with Jasmine) in the afternoon. Like Earl Gray or even Lady Gray in the afternoon too - put nothing in those but have to have milk in my Constant Comment in the morning.
Forget the haggis......forget the chicken livers too - grew up on those with bacon and had enough.
For "fun" this morning I used the Furminator on my yellow lab/golden retriever. It didn't matter where on her I used it, I got lots and lots of fur out of her. It was a huge pile. There was definitly enough there to spin into yarn and start a scarf - but a scarf out of my dog's fur just doesn't appeal. Her fur felt so nice and silky after all of that though. Did the other dog (golden retirever) too and didn't get much fur out of her at all. She just liked all the "mommy" attention.
At the zoo, there's a woman who spins yarn out of zoo animal fur: it used to be polar bear, but ours are gone now; then it was arctic fox and bison and moon bear. It's really neat! I used to have a dog I called a golden point-setta - golden pointer/setter retriever type. A dear beloved. She was succeeded by a purebred golden retriever who was dear and darling and a ditz until the day she died. No more- and no more of that eternal fur!!
Daughter has been going gangbusters on the yard. Since she got here Sunday, she's weeded the whole yard, move landscape plants that needed it, bought a small Red Maple,"Brandywine" she'll plant tomorrow. Tomorrow with some family help, she's going after a load of woodchips to cover the flower beds. Then after a bit more mowing, and clean up she's planting seeds--I had a few, she got more. My plan was to plug in some gourd plants and the vines would cover the yard--no mowing/no expense. The ones I wanted to grow didn't come up. Now with her help, our yard will have Sweet corn, lemon cucumbers, Jack'O'Lantern pumpkins, sugar Pumpkins, Lumina (white) pumpkins, Birdhouse gourds, Snake Gourds, and gourds that look like birds. The Irises are relocated, the Star Gazer Lilies will go in, and the roses that needed relocating(mostly babies) will have their new homes. Plus, she's sorted most of her stuff that she's storing here, so now I can get it into better containers and ship the stuff she doesn't want. Hadn't seen her since Nov. 2007. This has been a treat. It has also been a demanding week, keeping up with all the normal day-to-day and helping her--not physically--track down sources for things to do all this.
There'll be more to report tomorrow. Thank goodness the weather has been working with us. Rain is supposed to be coming in Sat. night and Sunday. She flies home Sunday.
Spent my day going through some of the 56 boxes that came out of storage. How fortuitous, I have boxes all around which gives me a chance to separate his stuff from mine & pack up some things & pitch lots, without his knowing what I'm up to. Can't believe some of the stuff he put in storage. An entire box of small plastic tumblers, paper plates, etc. and was PAYING to have it stored! Can't lift, but baby I can shift.
Hey Jimmy...I used to enjoy the Robbie Burns Suppers...and piping in the Haggis was a big production... (I agree, a wee bit of the Scotch whiskey makes the Haggis a bit more palatable. (I also found if I could smuggle one of those tiny Tabasco Sauce bottles in my evening bag, it also enhanced my haggis greatly! And there's a hand, my trusty fiere! And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak' a right guid-willie waught, For auld lang syne. ...........From the Cathcart Clan to yours.
New Realm - headache gone now. Disappeared after the thunderstorms. The storms went thru fast with wind, rain and thunder but no damage.
Kathi and Diane - did you make it through the storm without damage? Sure hope so.
Jean21 - Valerian Root can make you sleepy but it does not work like a sleeping pill. It mostly relaxes you. Take it at night and you may wake up not as sore. During the day I would take just one pill with no sleepiness, but at night take 2.
I started trying melatonin and it puts me to sleep - feels like a sleeping pill.
6/5/09 Good Morning everyone. Just getting daylight here in WV and may get a few more showers this morning. We are hoping for 3 days straight with no rain. I am still trying to keep some plants alive on my porch waiting for the garden to dry out. Farmers Market day today and I plan to bring home 16 quarts of strawberries to share, eat and freeze. You are welcome to come by my place this weekend for a supply of fresh lettuce and onions.
Charlotte, I will check on the smallest amount of Valerian Root. Surprisingly, I am not sore today maybe I'm not as old and decrepit as I thought!!!!!! If my upper back didn't bother me I could do more work. I can't even change the sheets on a twin size bed without my back starting to hurt. If I don't do anything my back doesn't hurt.
Top o th' mornin' to all. Beautiful and sunny here in northwest IN at 6:22. Going to help rearrange stuff at our county historical museum for awhile this a.m. then grocery shop while I'm in town. Then we'll see what hb would like to do this afternoon. This weekend attending a Miami All Nations Gathering is a possibility. Enjoy the day!
I've been at the desk for about a half hour and am working on my first cup of tea. Stopped by the NF on the way home to visit with DW. She was a bit grumpy last night, her ankles were swollen quite a bit and she is having difficulty urinitating. Talked to the nurse about the situation, they were to elevate her feet and have the Dr look at her today. She only has about 25% kidney function. I'll have to follow up with them later today.
It's 67 degrees here this AM, some rain is expected again today with a high of 75. Today promises to be another light day here at work. My two grown granddaughters and I have a date tonight and plan to hit one of the local mexican restaurants for dinner. I should be the envy of all of the old guys in the place (and probably some of the young ones too).
Nancy B: Slainte', I bring Clan Cathcart greetings from Clan Lamont. Burns Suppers are a hoot, I've attended several, we drink so many toasts you run out of scotch really quick. Maybe I should try a tall glass of sweet tea instead. :-( Nah, it just wouldn't be the same. I hear the Edinburgh Military Tattoo is the greatest, I'd love to see it, I understand it is one of the most heavily attended events in Scotland.
I find an eight oz sporran flask works a lot better than a tabasco bottle. It great to know you are a Scottish Lassie!
my DH also has his own kilt from the ancestoral 'Clan'.. he had it made from the clans specific patterns designating their designs. -he loved it:) hairy flask and all. haha. used to talk about eating haggis too.
today is mommies-day-out for 4hrs.. whoppeee... i am off to prowl stores. and groceries. DH is still in bed and i need to get him up and showered and breakfast going. lazing over my first coffee:) have a great day everyone, be back later! divvi
Divvi, What is your husband's ancestral Clan? That hairy flask you are talking about may be a sporran. I presume you are talking about the leather or fur pouch that is worn on the front of a kilt.
Here's hoping today will be better than yesterday. On my way to visit my Dad at the assisted living facility, a caregiver called and said he had fallen. When I got there he was confused and lethargic, could not urinate (I wanted to take a sample to be checked for UTI). They called his doc and got some Cipro, forced fluids, so I'm hoping we can avoid another hospitalization. He'll be 95 in July. At least my DH was in good form yesterday, when he saw me sobbing about my Dad, he was really sweet and hugged and comforted me. It's at times like that I realize my real husband is still inside there somewhere!
yep thats it, worn over the front, and yes its hairy..!!! ugh. maybe goat hair?. not sure about which clan it is ..have to ask a family member and get back with you on that one. divvi =the color is green/navy plaid is all i know! haha. seeya!
marilyn, so sorry dad is not well. antibiotics/fluids will help alot. he needs fluids supervised on a daily basis. i keep harping this is the major cause of uti.. i know i go there lots on this subject. hope he is well soon..divvi
UTI's are strange things, I think DW may be headed for another UTI as well. It seems like they can never get rid of them compeltely and they keep recurring. They do need to drink a lot of water.
Good Morning. It going to be a beautiful day here in Chicago, middle 70's. Got news last night that my son is going to Pohang South Korea next Sunday. He is contracted to teach English at a private school there. I didn't think he would be leaving so soon. He will be gone a year. He doesn't get why I'm a little upset about him being gone a year. HELLO, going to a foreign country, by yourself, knowing no one AND I won't be able to see him for a year. Going to get him a camera for his laptop so we can talk on SKYPE and see him.
Good morning from the mountains of Colorado. Would love to sit on the deck and view the snowy beauty of Pikes Peak (2' of new snow this week) but is is still a little chilly this time of morning.
Hagis was a little hard for me to take and now that I know what is in it, I can understand. My daughter liked it, but dh and sil did not. Out last trip we could take was to Scotland. DH loved the bag pipes and the music.
Problems yesterday with the carehome dh is in. He seem so sad and emotional, but of course he could not tell me what is wrong. Just wanted to move him home, but know that is not possible. If I could only get a straight answer from the manager. What a sad disease!!
Today we are finally getting the all day rain that had been forecasted all week. So there will be no long walk today for my husband. He seems to be handling it OK.
We are on water restrictions (not because of drought) so when we got the car home from our short morning trip to buy newspapers, we took some old "garage" towels and dried off the car. It looks like it has been washed.
I don't know if I've ever mentioned the newspapers. My husband has been buying 5 or 6 a day for a couple of years now. He used to spend all day reading them. He still can read, but mostly he just looks at the "pretty pictures" these days. But, along with the long walks, the newspapers are the only thing that makes him happy, so if there aren't a pile next to his chair I offer to go out and get him new ones. He has not yet reached the point where he wouldn't know if I brought them back from the garage while he was sleeping, but I've been tempted to do that during really bad weather.
I like this thread a lot. Hope we can keep it going. Maybe we need to start a new one every Sunday so they don't get too long.
june 5, good morning from the U P cloudy today with a little rain. had a granddaughter sleep over last night and my weinnie dog keep bothering her he is such a little pest but i love him. now have the granddaughter from around the corner over so the girls can play together, i read about alot of your travels , wish i could have done that but with five kids and just keeping our heads above the water it was impossible, fartherest i got was Az. and Navada. i guess i am content here in my little town with all my family near.i am just going to enjoy my girls today and maybe take a walk later. smiles for everyone, thanks all for being my extended family i can vent to
good idea Starling, start a new thread on sundays! this one is already so long! everyone seems to enjoy keeping this one 'no AD talk' haha. to start our day! so on sunday who ever is first start a new thread! and new date! divvi
A very cheery good morning from the southeast. Having been without cable (TV and internet) for two days, I have a lot of catching up to do here. We finally got some much-needed rain, so everything is green and dewy this morning. Hopefully I can finish spreading pine straw today.
Good Idea, Starling! This is the fun discussion to start our day! And we already have 195 and it's only Friday!
In addition to having an accident-free night, which always helps me to wake up smiling, it has been a great morning! Everything is going smoothly at home and at work, and someone brought donuts (National Donut Day) and I had two! I'm excited because next weekend my daughter, who teaches school in England, will be home for the summer. I haven't seen her since last August. The temperature outside is in the high 60s, getting to the 70s this afternoon. Perfect picnic weather (and driving around town with the top down on the convertible!).
Chiming in a day or so late on the topic of chickens feet, but my DW says her mother used to cajole her and her sisters into eating them with the promise that it would make them pretty. Must have worked, because that Holladay bunch had four beautiful sisters. Or maybe it was from having their faces washed with the dishrag -- their mother also claimed that would make them beautiful when she dabbed at their dirty faces.
About the military tattoo at Edinburgh Castle -- I hope they've replaced those contoured metal stadium seats since we were there maybe 25 years ago -- great performance, but pure misery sitting in those too-narrow seats for hours.
