I posted a while ago about taking DH to a different neuro and he checked EVERYTHING! He also took a chest X-ray and that showed a "thickening" so he had to have a Cat Scan. We went yesterday for the follow up and DH has to have a bone density test next week. They, whoever they are, think my DH may have osteoporosis.
This neuro started my DH on Namenda along with the Aricept and he seems to be doing better. In fact he can remember more than he did before. He can't remember everything but he is doing much better. The neuro mentioned Vascular Dementia but he said that type has sudden drops whereas Alz has a slow progression. So I think we are in a holding pattern. I guess it's just a matter of how long we will be there.
I am grateful and thankful that I don't have any of the issues so many of you are going through and my prayers are with all of you. I hope you find something to smile about and enjoy in each day.
Jean my dh has osteoporosis along with all his other things and pcp prescribed Fosamax for it. I gave it to him for a year then due to the cost with that and his other meds and considering his AD stage I decided to discontinue it. Anyone have thoughts about this?
Mary, Right now everything is pretty quiet on the SIL front! DH called her a couple of weeks ago after trying for 3 days to get her. She said the woman from APS had stolen her money and she has blamed the woman who used to take her wherever she wanted to go for stealing $5,000.00. None of it is true. The woman from APS changed one of SIL's CD's to something with a better interest rate. Of course SIL doesn't remember agreeing to it so now everyone has stolen her money.
She has managed to completely alienate the woman who took her places by accusing her of stealing, leaving really nasty messages on her phone and sending post cards for anyone to read. I am surprised she didn't call here when she was saying her money had been stolen and wanting us to run up to Ohio. She did ask my DH when we were going up there but he told her his health wouldn't let him run up there all the time.
Sometimes I wonder if she has forgotten we are here. That's okay with me as long as she doesn't call compalining about things that never happened and wanting us to go up there. I think DH has had enough with her so hopefully I will just have him to deal with and he is pretty good right now.
Lois, my DW took Fosamax for probably ten years, but we've recently discontinued it after reading somewhere that the benefits from having taken it may continue for some time into the future anyhow. Pricey, yes, and a nuisance also for my DW in having to remember to take the pill once a week, chase it with a full glass of water, and then wait a half hour, not lying down, before eating breakfast.
my SIL took fosamax and has super bad issues with her espophagus/reflux/lesions/ now after taking it a yr..she blames it on the drug. never had issues before. all meds seem to have the good /bad issues. divvi
I have taken Fosomax for a number of years and it hasn't been a problem. I just have to remember not to bend over to do anything for a while or I do feel nauseaus.
I took Fosamax for about a year, and then because of the constipation, Dr. had me try Actonel. Finally told him, that's no good either with my IBS--nausea, constipation, cramping, and then just get straightened out only to take it again. Stopped the "bone" meds. Continued with 1200 Calcium with 400 Vitamin D daily, all along. Just recently, found out my Vit. D level is really low, despite the 800 with the Calcium and the 400 in my multivitamin daily, so now I have to take an added 2000 of Vitamin D daily.
I'll be finding out more the beginning of May when I go in for my physical.
carosi, me too had my hormones all checked and was very! low in vit D...taking 5000!unit/day for 3months -to get levels up. only have a few pills left after 3mos.-feeling much better and my low back is so much better, i am supposd to take the calcium it makes me nauseous..ick.. briegull taking .625 premarin?? it will kill the flashes..:)
I took premarin (first .625 then eventually down to .325 every other day) without having flashes, from 1983 on until last Jan.1. I had had a hyst. in '76 and the last ovary removed in '83; I wanted to be able to take premarin to avoid osteop. But dammit, it still isn't generic (I hear this is politics), I do feel sorry for the mares, and so I said that at 73 I should be able to survive without it. So I stopped very slowly. And the flashes came raging in. At the moment they're in abeyance, but I've begun to dread night times. I have a doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks and will ask about the sublingual then.
you should be able to get some relief witht he dr. to get the sublinguals they have to write a script and send to the compounding pharmacies. most reg drs dont do this only the bio identical drs do this. but if you are going for the premarin again your regular dr of course can help you there. let me know how it goes! divvi
ps i was told going off the hormones cold turkey isnt good either.. i have my SIL 69 flashes like crazy too. strange huh..
I'm knocking wood as I say this. Perimenopause had me in its clutches for several years. Miserable on going symptoms, as the hormones diddled their merry way down the path of leaving. On again/off again cycle, early/late, heavy/light. Then nausea--morning sickness all day--not quite to being sick, couldn't grocery shop--especially meat dept. Ask Dr. for help. He said, "Sometimes as we get older, we have to put up with these things." WRONG ANSWER!!!! Changed Dr.s New Dr. read over file, said I'd been going through this for 10 years. Needed to check health of uterine lining, then start low grade hormone therapy to give my body a baseline. It could do its little jig on that. Within 3 weeks I felt great and had way more energy. Eventually finished perimenopause, and then when all the flap came up about dangers for heart, and vascular issues, I talked about stopping. Dr. said I could, but cautioned that if I did, wean off it slowly. Did that. So far no problems--it's been close to five years, and I may have had 4 or 5 flashes. And they weren't big. I am lucky.
divvi-- I take my calcium right in with my breakfast. Food buffers. My sister spreads hers out over a couple separate times a day and takes with a health drink--juice, milk, not just water--same reason.
