A really useful site for women alone or not is Journeywomen.com. They were one of the first, but there are many now, I see.

There's a problem. When I was in high school, there were sororities. I was in one. I didn't like the cliqueishness, etc. When I went to college there were "literary societies" - same thing, different name. I refused to join. SO I was asked to be the representative of all the women who didn't join such groups. There were only 10 or so. I said no, if I had wanted to be part of a group I would have joined one.

I'm the same with travelling. Women who like to travel alone find it a bit difficult to join a group for any organized travel. The OAT experience was different; it was really good, and a lot of us were individuals who liked the freedom it gave us. Ditto the Djoser trip to Egypt (I still marvel that I went darting around Cairo alone!) I did NOT like a tour I took to Russia (and, btw, Azerbaijan and Georgia) in 1988. I mean I didn't like the group-tour aspect of it, layered over the Intourist aspect; the countries were fascinating.

I have found that an able-bodied middle-aged (or plus) woman who doesn't try to flirt or dress provocatively is very well accepted by just about anyone. I take stickers to give kids (there are always kids around) and often balloons to make into animals. I stick my nose in kitchens everywhere! I smile! And I'm careful. After two mild muggings, I don't carry a handbag, just a camera case and money dispersed over my person. I don't usually go far away from the hotel at night alone. I've found that being encumbered by too much luggage is a pain, and dangerous, so I generally travel around with one large backpack and a camera case, and layers. Trouble is, I often have been in two climates on one trip: Thailand in 90+ degrees then Japan where I visited a ski resort! London just past Christmas and Mallorca thereafter where it was 85!

How new do the pictures have to be? I hate to have my picture taken so any I have would be older ones...sans wrinkles of course.LOL Although, thanks to good genes, there is barely any gray hair even now. I think I would prefer good genes for the wrinkles, I could have dyed my hair :-O

briegull, its a lovely site you have. One question, why didn't you use the pic of you on the elephant?? If I ever get enough time away from this site and my LO, I will be exploring more of your site.
  3.
The pictures can be any size, but most are 4x6 - but when you go to the site to get the url, it asks picture size, and you click on thumbnail, and it should shrink it to the appropriate size. Try that, Kitty and see if it works.

Brigull, I love your picture! I'm going to your website tonight!

    briegull,

How do you deal with the difference in languages when you are traveling alone? In May, my husband and I went to Russia with a group. We would have had a lot of difficulty if there hadn't been a translator with us. We had the same issue in Nicaragua last January.

Janet, I decided early on I couldn't possibly learn Greek and Thai and Russian. I know some Spanish, some French, and did download an Italian lesson book to listen to when I walked before I left, but that's about it. What's necessary is YES, NO, PLEASE, THANK YOU, EXCUSE ME, BEAUTIFUL, DELICIOUS. And lot of eye rolling, hand gestures, etc. I always carry the name and address of the hotel when I go out - they have business cards at the desk, usually. And I plan carefully, try not to have maps pulled out in the open too often. I have gotten lost fairly frequently, but I just orient myself to a tall building or the sun or something, and wander.

Someday I'll tell you about Tbilisi.

LeeLyle, well, I didn't like the elephant as much as the sloth. And I couldn't fit the elephant in and still have ME visible!

Oh yes, Nikki, thank you very much. And also Mary for the thumbnail tip. One of the problems that took me so long was, I didn't know you had to save when you delete. So I had a very hard time replacing my original picture. (Tip for Marsh)

On a spiritual site I'm on, it doesn't accept photos with more than 200 pixals. Mine, even thumbnail has 247. Anyone know how to reduce the number of pixals?
  8.
I give up. I've tried every suggestion above, but always get a picture that is MUCH too big. There is no place for "thumbnail" that I can find. When I right click on the picture there is no paint to send. I have tried all four possible links.

Don't give up yet. My daughter had a picture and I sent her the instructions and my sign in information and she
put mine on. Saved me a lot of grief.

Marsh, I hope I remember correctly, but on the tinypic site, there is a place that says size, & then it gives you choices. Pick thumbnail. Don't give up. I was really challenged, but refused to give up as frustrating as it was for me. Then voila, a sense of accomplishment. Just keep asking questions & someone will walk you through it, step by step. Have you deleted the photo that was much too big & hit save? I couldn't add a new photo until I hit save on the deleted one.

I'm still working on it. I don't know why but it's taking forever to download and then it clicks off. It worked the first time and the picture was way too big so I deleted it. Now, I'd like to start all over again and I'm having
trouble getting it to download. I hate to be paranoid, but I really don't think this thing likes me very well. it's doing everything it can to frustrate me (silly grin). I'll work on it some more tomorrow.

Nikki, I may take you up on that...our Pic is the really small one and I can't change it to the next step. Dumb. Does it work to have to enlarge it rather than shrink it?

    HI Kathi, on tiny pictures.....

when you first go to load the picture, it has an option to size it.
If that doesn't work, I would open the picture with photo software, or even something
as simple as the paint program to resize it. Then load it to tiny pictures again.

There is a free utility called PIXresizer that can open any photo and resize it. That is all it does and it does an excellent job. I'm not so sure I'd try paint to do it.

Here is the link from CNet. I like to use CNet for shareware and freeware programs because they make sure they don't have viruses before they put them online. If you can't get it there, you probably shouldn't be using it.
