I appreciate those of you who are alerting me to spam posts. However, because of the ancient nature of these boards, technologically speaking, it is difficult, if not impossible, for me to track down the discussions in my administration account.
If you write to alert me to spam, PLEASE tell me the name of the discussion. Without it, I cannot find it to fix it.
Am I getting so daft in my old age that I think it better that you check the site every day yourself and spot the unusual titles? (See site for examples.) Or give someone else the authority.
Joan, If your "administrative account" doesn't give you the same view of the message boards that we have, perhaps you can open another account as if you were a newcomer to the site? Then you would have the titles more quickly and you would not get duplicative email alerts from current users. If that doesn't work, then I think Mary's idea of giving someone else the authority is a good one to consider. Thank you for starting this site. Thank you for leaving it in good hands going forward, hard as that may be to think about doing. I hope you are feeling in better health and that Spring will put a spring in your step.
In case Joan isn't reading the message boards, I've sent an email with the above comment to her also.
I was one of the ones that tried to alert you to spam via email. Here is a list of all the spams, the names being used and the dates. (I will have to break it down into a few posts, since posts will only allow so many "words").
Do you still have an IT guy - they should know how to find this and prevent it.
Try to remember back when this board was your lifeline. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to wade through all this spam to find posts that people are depending to find answers on. Our posts are woven between all the spam posts. The board has way more spam than posts. Do you not have a way to view this board and see what has been happening? You said the format of the board is so obsolete, you need us to do the work of finding the title of each spam post so it can be removed. Can you not view it and see the titles? It took me about an hour cutting and pasting from the time this started: I have listed the name of the poster and the date and the titles of the posts.
I was so disappointed when after looking forward to the website being updated for so long last year, seeing the board was not updated at all. When you said you needed to be away from it, everyone totally sympathized and understood your need for self care after you lost your beloved spouse and were incapacitated with health issues of your own. I suggested that maybe you could turn it over to others and at least temporarily give someone else the ability to monitor it (greet new people, remove spam, etc). This board has been everything for people in the trenches and was my lifeline for over 7 years. i hate to say it, but the lack of care for this support board makes me feel uncared for, and looks like you wish it would just go away. That would be a major loss - the archives that go back to the beginning were the best education I had to cope with over a decade of dealing with the disease. There is a wealth of information there that is being ruined for people who come here and turn away due to the spam. All the contributions of people over the years are a valuable resource that it is a shame to lose. I have given referred folks to this site that are at the beginning of their journey and have no other support.
There are people here that need it desperately, and it is dying from neglect. There are times it has been inaccessible, and majorly spammed. I know you intend to do something and keep saying you'll let us know. Please help us out here. Modernize the board. Many of us would donate to do so. Let someone else moderate if you cannot. Or refer people to a functional site like the Alzheimer Association spouse board. I am sending this via email also. I don't know if the links will work (you might be able to click on the title and get to each spam post in the email copy.
Here is a list of the SPAM posts, so you can see what happening. Ignore the numbers - they happened from cutting/pasting. I hope this formats so it is usable. I bet there is a spam filter somewhere that got turned off or something.

The paramount thing, I believe, is that the work Joan did here helped thousands of people through this ordeal.
The second thing is that Joan's pain is as valid as anyone's where the vast majority go through several years of hardship before they even start to land on their feet and start to rebuild.
Joan's pain is visible in ways few reveal. Coming here is too painful even though she's struggled several times to make the attempt. Instead she has kept it afloat while trying to keep above water herself.
Joan is one of the many that are swept away afterwards when the mooring has given way. Some don't experience it that way. Most do. Joan has been hit hard by it which has been clear for years. I hope that she is close to less hard times where I know that those times come as unconsciously realized as our transition to survivors of constant stress was. Or our transition from spouse to prisoner was.
The functional question is what do we value? Under normal circumstances users would have a right to certain services; but, there's nothing normal about this. Joan started this because there wasn't anything like it and there still isn't. The group has discovered an escape hatch where they won't be completely stranded and yet along with a group of vets and quite a few more that look in, there is a gravitation to this place.
The truth, I believe, is that emails to Joan asking her to do more are not helpful. The feelings expressed are understood and shared, but those are normal reactions to the situation. I feel them too, but I won't ask someone to do more when I know full well what they are going through.
Joan is demonstratably a strong woman. You have to know she would like to do more. She can't. She has left the light on and that is what the situation is, and has been for several years.
The central core of this experience is survive, recover, rebuild. Some of us end up just surviving. Some of us end up surviving and recovering. Some of us rebuild. And a minority jump to something else which is it's own valid road but not the experience for most. In all of them what we value are foundation stones and for many of us learning what we, ourselves, value is a new experience itself, especially when it's such an empty canvas.
If the lights go out here, an important part of my life will have been disconnected. Life has taught me to be more understanding of myself and so I remind myself that this whole thing has been a lesson in humanity that has gone where no one has gone before.
It has no normal for that reason and not one soul took into account that when the tsunami hit, she too would be swept away.
Heal up Joan. You did good and fully deserve accolade. I'm sorry it's so hard. I doubt you'll be reading this. If you ever start up again, send me an email, I'll be glad to pitch in. In the meantime, we're on our own, which takes me back to learning how I value things. That the thing exists or not, for example, and what that means to me.
It means that despite the years, and events, and new people in my slowly evolving life, I still have a connection to this place that housed my road through and I still have a wish to help or lighten a moment - to give such as I got knowing the despair we go through.
It is a community of memories and memories of community. It is the stories and the moments - thousands of them - captured in their raw form. It's the thousands of moments when someone understood something that would help them. It's the thousands of screams of rage, howling at the moon, straw breaking the camels back, stunned realizations of poop, of their lives lost, of love lost, and of courage. Piles and piles of courage.
If it ever goes, my last act will be to save Daisy and Mae. They will come with me as part of this story. In the meantime, this unique story in time continues which is something I value.
Wolf - we are most all aware of the toll Sid's illness took on Joan. We all understand that and that it has been a long, hard road for her to where she can even start to recovery emotionally.
She always told us she had people that was monitoring this site when she was unable to. It seems they left after Sid died. I think what most of us want is: if she can't then find someone who will monitor it, will have the power to delete spam. I think that is all we are asking. It doesn't have to be Joan, just someone she trust and gives the power to delete spam.
Wolf, Joan and I have corresponded before with board problems that needed fixing over the last two years, and things were fixed. I believe she is capable of setting limits, and emailing her with board issues is exactly what she asked us to do, recently, even prior to this post. She asked for the titles of the spam posts so they could be removed. Paramount are ALL the members trying to navigate this disease and trying to manage their spouse's illness and save themselves, Joan included.

Mariposa, Thanks for posting the spam threads. I just emailed Joan and referred her to your post.
I'm not sure whether this is worth the effort anymore. In the past, there were so many people (including myself) who this site guided through this nightmare. But now there are very few people who are still fighting in the trenches (as we like to say) and I question whether they are getting any help or comfort here. I stopped posting for the most part because I don't think I have anything to offer, and the site is not attracting new members who do have something to contribute. It seems like one of these days, the site will just die by drowning in spam.
The "discussion boards" part of the site is a big mess. It looks like we now have a new member, who is bringing all kinds of stuff, including spam, to the top.
I suggest that we immediately discontinue bringing threads to the top. It is no longer helpful and it just contributes to the disorder.
P.S. If anyone can contact Joan via Facebook, that would be helpful.
That's weird. There is no spam on my pages until you get to page 4, which is the spam that was posted back in January. (That spam was never cleaned up.)
On Thursday night, April 19, I emailed Joan about the latest spam attack. (I was not able to cut and paste the posts since I'm on my tablet and don't know how to do that on it.)

Can you eliminate or block a member, thus blocking/removing their spam? If so, hundreds could be eliminated by removing a few fake accounts. It does look like someone is creating a new ID each time they come here posting similar spam. I wonder if some filter is open that detects multiple posts?
