General: did not qualify for social security disability

    i had the call from social security disability yesterday. dh dose not qualify for disability because of the job be worked for 20 years [firefighter]. they do not pay in to social security. i was afraid to get my hopes up. we do not qualify for any other assistance program. he is too young,52 yrs old. and his retirement is too much for anything else. i just wanted to let you all know about this latest development. jav

    Is there a disability program similar to social security's through the firefighter's retirement?

    Most states have short term disability. I've been on it myself in more than one state. For the police and fire department, they might have long term disability as well. In fact I'd be shocked if they didn't.

    Is there a fraternal organization for the fire departments in your area? Go to them and ask what is out there. You might be surprised.
