Searched high and low for hb's military papers. Couldn't find 'tho' I know I've seen them long ago. He, of course, has no clue about what I'm talking about when I ask. Silly me, I asked a question. Anyway, I went on line, found the form to request info and sent it in. Received a letter saying a fire destroyed the major portion of records for period 1912-1959. However, they sent a "Certification of Military Service." "The info used to prepare the NA Form 13038 was obtained from an alternate record source."
Anyway, it confirms what I'd already thought: hb doesn't quality for VA benefits because he was in the Army from 7/7/55 - 5/21/58. Stationed in Korea for 18 mos AFTER the "police action," which is considered to be: 6/27/50-1/31/55. Bummer so far as VA benefits; there's a Soldier's Home nearby that has a beautiful campus. That doesn't mean care is good, of course, but it would better fit our pocketbook for placement. Since that's out, home it is.
Know what you mean, Zibby. DH was in the war and I applied for Aid & Attendance. Disqualified - our income was $58 above the max! But did enroll him in their health checkup every 6 months. Prescriptions are more expensive through them than I already pay - because of our income (what income???). So far, they have not been of any help to us either.
Others might know this but I just found out veterans can get a 15% disc. on your cell phone bill - for the veterans phone. All you need is their DD214 and fill out the application. Make sure you black out the SS#. Verizon, ATT, Sprint all supposedly do it. Everything helps.
I don't know in what state you live, but here in New Hampshire, a relatively new bill allows vets who had served at least 90 days of active duty (even if NOT during time of war) to qualify for the soldiers home. I wonder if any other states have started doing the same?
