There was an article by Bill Lyon, sports editor (or maybe former sports editor) of the Philadelphia Inquirer that was in my local hardcopy paper this morning. Put in keywords like Bill Lyon...Never, ever, ever give in and you should be able to find it online.

A friend just told me about that, I went to our paper's website & read the two articles he's written so far...June 14 & 23. I guess there's more to come, but no set dates that I could find.

Yes, the second one was in our local paper over the weekend. It is amazing that he can write as well as he can, but as he does say himself...the deficits are there.

The third article by Mike Lyon, called "My Alzheimer's Fight: Buy Time" appeared in our local newspaper yesterday, June 30, on the editorial page.

The fourth article by Mike Lyon, "My Alzheimer's Fight: The Goal is to Shape the Minds of Others" is in our local paper today, July 7, on the editorial page. He still seems very high-functioning, but I can't help wondering what those around him would say, and if he is being truly realistic about his status. (I'm not saying he isn't...I'm just wondering.) His articles seem like he hasn't lost much if any self-awareness, but again...I wonder. Anyway, he sounds like a dynamite guy, and I certainly wish him well with all my fingers and toes crossed.

Another article in the series appeared in our local newspaper yesterday. "Doctor Reveals How His Patient Is Battling the Dreaded Alzheimer's" is the title--it is written by Mike Lyons's doctor. I didn't find it particularly useful..as it turns out, Mike is not the typical Alzheimer's client, because he is (so far) maintaining his self-awareness. Also, he has a large extended family, and they apparently have banded together to be there for him. So that is good--and I can't help but have a lot of admiration for Mike. He is quoted as saying, "I'm taking a philosophical approach to this disease. I know it can't be beat, but we can try."
