    http://neverignore.info/early-stages-of-alzheimers-could-be-detected-by-distinctive-smell-in-urine/

I know since his diagnosis hb's urine has a smell. If I go into the bathroom too soon after him, I smell it. (keep in mind we live in an RV and the toilet is in a room of its own). I can't remember if it had the smell beforehand. I thought maybe it was the galantamine or supplements he takes, but I stopped the galantamine with no change. I stopped the supplements for a week and no change. It is so frustration cause I clean the toilet and once he goes it stinks again. So whatever is causing it doesn't all go down with the water.

Anyone else notice a different smell once diagnosed or even before?

    Hi Charlotte,

Have you heard about "Just A Drop" - something I saw on Dr. Oz, wherein a drop in the water will keep any odor from coming above the water level. I don't THINK it is expensive, but may be worth asking the pharmacy if it would help.

I think could be a sign of something else? I have noticed this in myself at times and worried about it then it just goes away. Go figure!

Considering in an RV you have only about an inch of water, don't think it would work! good suggestion though.

I didn't notice any difference in his urine smell.

I second the recommendation for that "Just-a-Drop" product. It's great for travel, too--you can get mini-bottles or little foil packets. Very discreet, and you don't have to choke yourself (or take up storage space) with those room sprays. It's available on Amazon. Use it before "going", or it even helps if dropped in after "going."

I saw this article on CNN this morning. It is sure relevant to this discussion.

Is it possible the smell is coming back from the tank underneath the toilet?

Now I'm concerned. My wife's urine has seemed extra stinky, lately. Is it a bladder infection or a urinary tract infection? We just treated a UTI not that long ago -- right about the same time I noticed the stronger smell. Is there something else going on?

What chemicals could I add to the toilet water to reduce the stink? Before or after she pees? Would washing the grout with vinegar and then hydrogen peroxide also help?

Of course, most of the time she doesn't make it to the toilet.

Use white vinegar in the bathroom. In my experience, it was the only thing that neutralized the odor. If the smell gets into her clothing, soak the areas with white vinegar before putting them into the washer. Try that "Just-a-Drop" product if you can put two or three drops into the toilet before she "goes." (Available on Amazon.) But if her urine has a foul smell, you need to get her checked for a UTI. (Same thing as bladder infection--the bladder is part of the urinary tract.)

j-dbarr: Our BR also had an odour . found that some of the tile was cracked and when husband had an accident the urine etc seeped into the grout and then into the floor below. Had to have tiles removed and also the wooden floor where the toilet was sitting and new floor and linoleum put down.

I didn't re-read this thread to see if it's been mentioned, but since I've been house training the puppy, I've found a product called "Nature's Miracle" that is great for removing urine stains and odors. The Amazon reviews make it pretty clear that people use it for getting rid of human incontinence odors as well as for pets.
