Don't know if this will help anyone. This is a program I stumbled upon that ships meals to a caregivers house. http://www.momsmeals.com/faqs/agencies-and-their-clients/

We used Mom's Meals for a couple of years, and had a lot of trouble with the company as time went on. The meals went downhill, like servings of fruit being replaced with jello. Also, on a number of occasions, when we received the meals, they were so warm that they were not safe to eat.

Our last two deliveries have been with Homestyle Direct meals. So far we like them better. There are selections for breakfast, as well as lunch or dinner. It is really, really helpful to have some meals that I don't have to shop for, or cook, or even think about--other than to place an order twice a month.

At first the only kind of meals I had heard of were Meals on Wheels. With Meals on Wheels, though, they didn't deliver on weekends, and if it was a holiday or the weather was really bad, we didn't get a meal. The home-delivered meals are better for us, because we get to choose what we get, and the meals come frozen, so we can eat them when it's convenient for us.

The meals that we receive are covered by the Medicaid waiver in our state.

The 90 yr.old woman I oversee gets Moms meals paid for by the office of the aging(PA).I called Moms Meals to see how much they cost,6.50 delivered. Not worth it, Portions are very skimpy. Probably cost 2 or 3 dollars at supermarket. The woman told office of aging and said she didn't want them, they said to please take them, they have so MUCH money to spend. She gives them away or trashes them. Oh, she also gets food stamps. She also gets free Gatorade and Boost.I shoul fo never saved for retirement.

Sad that they are not as advertised. The recipient I know really likes hers. It was through medicaid waiver here in Florida, too.

What we didn't find out from the local Council on Aging for a very long time is that they have a list of several vendors for home-delivered meals, so if one doesn't work out, there's usually another one to try. Some of these companies are more or less local, and other companies deliver to most of the country.

With most of the meals we've tried, especially Meals on Wheels and Mom's Meals, if we had been paying for them ourselves, I would have preferred a frozen Healthy Choice dinner (or home-delivered pizza!). It does seem like they are overpriced, but a lot of that is from the shipping costs, since they are very heavy and have to be kept frozen until delivery.

By the way, after getting meals delivered for quite a while, one time during our quarterly case manager home visit, DH asked if we could possibly get more meals. Of course we could--but nobody had bothered to tell us that. I've learned that with the Council on Aging, as well as other places we deal with, the rule is ask, ask, and ask again. Some things they might know about and not mention to you, and other things we've asked about they didn't even know about until they went back to the office and checked. (I cheated and went to the web site of the local Council on Aging, so I could find out what benefits they offer to aging and disabled people.)

Over the years, I've seen a truck deliver frozen meals to several houses in our neighborhood. The name on it is Schwan and it has an outline of a swan next to the name. Don't know the quality or price of the meals.

myrtle, Schwan has very good quality food- a bit expensive, but worth it if you can afford it. Stouffers and others in grocery stores are less expensive.

Funny, we don't qualify for ANY SERVICES from the local area office on aging even though we're both disabled and living on ssdi. First he was too young (under 62), now our ssdi income is too much and because we have a home (and we saved for retirement which was expected to be in about 5-10 years from now). I ask, ask again, and ask again and I'm always told nope you don't qualify.

I had no idea that the Medicaid waiver allowed for home delivered meals. That's a wonderful service. I'm glad some can qualify for them.

I wish I had known about this when my Mom was recovering from her lung surgery. Between the extra grocery shopping and cooking, there were many times I would have gladly paid 7.00 for a nutritious meal for her. All that is available here is meals on wheels, from past experience we knew she couldn't eat the majority of the food because she needs a low salt diet. A service like this would have been terrific!!
