Last week my husband had a severe case of vomiting-mostly water because he had consumed 3 bottles of water while out walking with his aide. He has not vomited since, but I notice he was having difficulty swallowing so a swallow evaluation has been ordered by his PCP. PCP examined him on Thursday and saw nothing wrong with him. Due to the swallowing issues, we've been pureeing his food and giving him high protein shakes to supplement the food/fluid intake. He either eats the food himself or will eat it if we feed to him. He is hungry and eating breakfast, marginally interested in lunch and won't ear dinner. Today he refused breakfast and the protein shake and I'm getting very worried. would not eat the yogurt or the scrambled eggs this am.
His appetite has always been good, no trouble eating but now he's even disinterested in ice cream. I am very concerned. I ask him if he has any pain, push gently on his stomach and he tells me nothing hurts and there's no pain. I guess I'll be calling the pcp again tomorrow.
yes Amber, there were a few threads on not eating which I read. He's still at home and has been in good physical heath but has just lost interest in food. Looking for a little support.
LFL ... My Helen used to sneak food from the refrigerator without me knowing about it, then she would not eat her meals. ............Will he drink fluids?
My DH lost any interest in eating about two weeks before he passed. I tried everything. Offer the food, and maybe after a few days he will want to eat again. This may be a temporary issue.
Thank you all for your suggestions and support. I love each and everyone of you-you've made this journey possible. Well, today lunch at Wendy's worked...ate it all and without choking. Came home and ate potato chips. You could be right Charlotte, fear of choking.
I too hope this is temporary and am grateful for your support.
LFL, Glad to hear Wendy's worked. I know it can be frightening when they don't want to eat. I hope his appetite stays, and the swallowing difficulties subside. You are so good to him.
LFL i find its sometimes just plain boredom of foods. Mine goes thru this phase quite regularly. What i didnt realize he literally forgets how to open his mouth to eat. Prodding a bit w something at lips usually reminds him how to start process. It is part of moving into latter stages as well. Hoping its temporary. Glad fast food perked him up. If they become constipated this can also cause loss of eating. Good luck
Well, so far today he has eaten well with no swallowing problems. I'm sure boredom with the same foods has something to do with it too. Keeping fingers crossed that it was only temporary.
I just never expected this to happen while he was walking around, exercising (albeit in a chair), walking with the aide, out and about town and sill able to talk even if it's only a few words. Some how I thought he would be bedbound when this happened. Obviously not.
