My husband wears suede slip on men's shoes...the all weather kind from Land's End. They are great..they give him warmth because they are fleece lined, the substantial eva soul provides good footing and balance. I switched to the slip-ons because since he's been wearing depends it is easier to take his shoes off when a change of clothing is needed instead of unlacing/lacing his sneakers each time.

I am looking for a similar shoe in a lighter top material and wondered if anyone has found or is using a similar shoe. I don't want the summer canvas slip ons because the soul is not substantial enough to help him with his footing and balance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Silvert's online catalogue has a few ideas. I've always had good luck with them.
  1.
I recently bought DH some shoes on zappos.com They are Hush Puppies Gil. They are easy to get off and on, have the velcro strap across, and come in three colors. (DH has brown.) The soles do not slip. They were $95, which I know is high, but DH desperately needed new shoes, and I desperately needed something that was comfortable, safe, decent-looking, and easy on/easy off.
  2.
I ordered Hushpuppies with the velcro strap from Footsmart. I think they were $85.00. They can usually be slipped off without undoing the strap. We've been happy with them.
  3.
Wow, I was thinking about this just today. My problem is that DH also has to have his shoes removed to change the pull-ups and he is getting more resistant about doing so. However, he can still tie his shoes and drawstring PJs!! He speaks in word salad, is incontinent, and has lost the ability to do almost everything EXCEPT he can still tie his shoes. I hate to make it impossible for him to do the last coordinated thing he can by switching to velcro shoes. What would you do?

marche, my husband can still tie his shoes (and the waistband draw string too) but I decided that if we were having to take his shoes off every time we changed his depends it wasn't worth the hassle for us or for him. Besides, it's a challenge to get him in clean clothes without a struggle. So slip-ons it is.

Thanks everyone, I'll look into Hush puppies. Maybe the sneakers with the Velcro too.

Thanks divvi, I'll look for dearfoams. I also found some interesting slip ons from Skechers...they look like a good walking shoe sole but not sure about the upper material - canvas and mesh. We tried on the Skechers mens go to walk 2 and go to walk 2-Maine (canvas). Also Walmart has the sneakers with Velcro - Dr scholls so I'll be looking for them as well this weekend.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

For the past few years I was able to find these type of shoes at Walmart and Kmart. Not to pricy, DH was mostly home and it was the perfect shoe for him.

Thank you all again for your very helpful suggestions. Here's what I found:
Walmart has Dr. Scholls mens shoes with Velcro closures at a reasonable price
They no longer seem to have Dearforms but have other brand slippers with a sole at a great price (even padded with faux fleece)
Kmart has everlast sneakers with Velcro closure in a few colors at a great price (@$20) but they are all wide width (dh has a small. narrow foot)
Famous footware has a variety of slip ons (including the skechers go walk 2 I mentioned earlier) which are all between $50-$65 on sale
JCPenny actually had the type of shoe I wanted...a slip on sneaker type shoe. It's propet in white and was exactly what I was looking for in looks but most importantly support and stability. It's about $63 on their website + shipping.
Since I am very frugal these days because the cost of DH's care is quite expensive, I always comparison shop on the web to see what specials/deals I might get, particularly over holiday weekends. This is NOT an advertisement, but since I am an Amazon prime member, I checked Amazon actually not expecting they would have this shoe. But they did at $47.50 with free 2 day shipping for prime members. so I said, "what do I have to lose?". I ordered on 5/24 with a delivery date of 5/28 (due to holiday). They arrived TODAY, look great, are TRUE TO SIZE and what I wanted. His aide even asked me to order a pair for him because he liked how they looked so much.

I will be looking at the hush puppies later this summer for fall/winter wear but right now I have found what I was looking for and thought I would share this info with my friends.

Thanks again for your suggestions and help. I truly don't know what I would do without each of you.

Edited for update: After 3 days, the shoes he likes the best and finds most comfortable to wear are the Propet white slip on sneakers. I like the skechers go walk 2 and hopefully they will stretch a little and he will wear those for dr.'s appts, etc but right now I am thrilled that he's accepted the slip on sneakers and I will probably buy him another pair in black.

LFL, thanks so much for all of this information. I've been thinking about buying my DH some velcro-closure shoes and with the info you've given us above, my search will be much quicker.
