After a blissful year of NO "blowouts", dh is now returning to that most unpleasant problem. So, okay, it's back. The question for me now is what contains the mess when you're out and about or at somebody else's home? It's bad enough to clean up at home, but at somebody else's home??? Knowing that this group has the most experienced pooper cleaner uppers on the planet, I'm thinking that you are the best folks to ask how to tackle this issue. Also, a while back one of the men caregivers told about a medication given to his wife that cleared this problem - are you still out there??

    thanks everyone,, again.

My husband is bowel incontinent but no "blowouts" YET. Most here have recommended sanipants, plastic pants that fit over the pull-ups. I have no idea what meds were suggested, but I do know many use immodium if there's a constant problem with loose stool.

I learned that the blowout messes usually would happen due to ill fitting pullups. they have to fit around the legs well whatever size the spouse is or it does nothing to contain. if there is a problem with openings around the leg with depends then you can also put one of the regular TAB pull type diapers on top of the depend that can be custom fitted to secure the leg fittings. then the plastic pants over that. that's 3 layers, and I don't know much else that can work and still allow them to move:) yes immodium will work but beware it can accumulate too and cause the reverse effects of impacted after time. use in small doses and only when an outing is imminent. of course containing is one thing and there isn't much to do about odors once its done. sometimes visits just have to be cut short and home for cleanups. trying to cleanup in someones else bathroom has its definite drawbacks. adding more fiber to the diet will also help regulate them.

Fiber - bread, pastas, nuts, that sort of thing? Fruit and veggies sends him to the privy . I will also get some of the tab diapers because my guy has the skinniest legs you've ever seen and I'm sure the openings on the others would not contain anything.

Fiber can be whole wheat breads/pastas, of course veggies and fruit, but you can also give it with benefiber and Metamucil. My husband's PCP recommended giving him benefiber.

We have the opposite problem now that his walking is diminished because of his broken knee. Not enough physical exercise so we are now dealing with managing bowels to prevent constipation. Senna S is our friend.

I find it easier to just add something like Metamucil or such in a drink.one that says fiber supplements. yes foods that are high in fiber are good. maybe a call to his dr would be in order. he can add something to his diet to help.

Yep! Sounds like a plan. Thanks ladies.

I get the TENA Brand pull-ups for men. They look and feel great, the product is soft like material. They have elastic on the legs and the back end works rather like a catchers glove for most times unless…….well you know, sometimes it is just a major blowout. Still it contains most. I also carry a bag with me of the big moist wipes, extra pull-ups, disposable gloves, bags to put the waste product in and seal, bags to put clothing in, extra pants, shirt, and socks. This bag also has my DPOA, my health POA, insurance cards, and social security number for Hubby. This bag goes with me in the car all the time. Side note: I cover up the door handle on the inside of the car with black electrical tape which is the same color as the door. This way he doesn't try to open the door while I'm driving. The handle is silver on a black door so it was very visible and attractive to him to grab. It's easy for a normal person to just pull off the tape to use the handle and tape it back up. I also have a fleece hat for him with a fold up brim which adds a second layer of fleece to protect his head from bumping getting in and out of the car.

Also forgot to mention, we always try toilet before we leave the house. Sometimes he goes, sometimes not but I always have a better sense of security knowing he has gone already once today before getting in the car. Something about the grocery store check-out always triggers a movement???????
