My husband has bvFTD and is 5 years since dx but has most likely had it for 8 years. In mid-late stage 6 and was only rarely incontinent until he broke his knee cap this June. He has become increasingly bowel incontinent since July and if I manage his trip to the bathroom to urinate, he is not urine incontinent. The past few days he tears off his Tena briefs and refuses to wear any incontinence product. He tears them all off and if he begins to urinate and poop all over the house I will place him, which I don't want to do. He's on Seroquel, Neurontin and clononpin and he still tears off his adult pull-ups. Any suggestions? He is one of the most difficult dementia patients his doctors have treated.
I'm sorry that you have this added complication to deal with. Wish I had something practical to offer, but I don't. Tena products are the least irritating brand that I used, so that can't be a factor. Does he have a rash somewhere that's bothering him? I'm hoping that someone with more know-how than me will be along. An old flannelette sheet with a pad or two in it for him to sit on might at least partially contain it: sort of tucked up around him, but not binding.
LFL maybe get a few regular cotton briefs that he likes and use them over the tenas? or under. more trouble but it may help at least contain. and you maybe can try changing him on a schedule. if hes urininating in it maybe hes feeling wet or bother him. gosh I hope you manage, all else fails try the plastic one piece sani pants OVER to maybe help keep him out of the depends.? its plastic and fits over the whole thing. I doubt he could pull off the tena unless he removes the whole plastic one. good luck!and make sure it fits snug to make it harder.
Some days are harder than others. I am so sorry that you have to deal with all this. I do not have any words of wisdom to share, but I am here with you and I completely understand the stress. Lots to prayers to you today.
Bonnie, my dh has kidney stones as well, and I wondered whether his incontinence was because of them, but his doctor didn't seem to think there was a connection. She put his incontinence down to the disease. LFL - I feel for you but I am afraid I don't have any advice to offer that has not already been given. My dh wears his boxer briefs over his pull ups. This at least slows down the process of taking them off.
I replaced my husband's briefs with pull-ups a long time before he needed them. I told him they would be more comfortable. Besides he didn't have much of a choice because the briefs had disappeared and he excepted them.
Thanks all. I did start using them before he needed them and he still wouldn't keep them on. Now that he needs them (no cotton briefs in sight-hid them all) he still doesn't want to wear them.
