Frontline on PBS is scheduled to present "Life and Death in Assisted Living", on Tuesday, July 30.
I have seen only a very brief preview; the focus seems to be on older residents. It seems like it is an hour in length. I think it will be available on the internet on the same day.
Just wanted to post this so anyone interested will know about it.
From the preview I saw, it wasn't apparent. It just said something like "check your local PBS listings". On my cable system there are two PBS channels available and they are showing it at different times (XFinity). I think it depends on time zones too.
I agree it was terrible to see. What is disturbing is the lack of training the staff gets and the ratio of staff to residents. And they were right in reporting many ALF's are marketing their services to families with a loved one with dementia. Given that there is no govt oversight/regulation of ALFs combined with the staffing/training issues and greed component, ALF's can pretty much do what they want.
Watched it and I sure wouldn't be putting my hubby into any home that that company ran. But it is the same every where with for profit companies....the bottom line comes first. But at the expense of people that have live a good productive life and then at the end need help. That is so wrong. This happens in all countries...there was a report up here by W5 news show and it focused on aggressive patients attacking non aggressive patients. After the show it received 10,000 reports (remember our population is 1/10 that of the states) from other people about how their LO's was attacked in all different care facilities. The biggest reason.....not enough staff, which boils down to money! It shows us that we have to be a very strong advocate for our spouses and never be afraid to ask questions.
I think that here in Canada, the government-run care facilities versus the private ones, are better for that reason, profit. There are too many corners cut, particularly in staff, in order to save money in the private care facilities my husband was in. They look good, but too often that's just appearance.
This show was absolutely chilling. Glad I watched it, though, because I learned about the absence of oversight in assisted living. And I thought nursing homes were bad…
I thought that one family member was absolutely right when they said that if these things had happened at a children's day care, and a two year old was injured or killed, there would have been an uproar and the place would probably be shut down. Older people don't have the same value to society, do they? Very sad.
I watched it also and it was awful. I had no idea there were no regulations or monitoring of assisted living facilities. The one my DH goes to one day a week is a 5 star rated place. My daughter asked who is it rated by? I don't know. Does anyone know who rates a facility and what they're rated on?
we've got some winners due to lax or mon existent oversight herein Fl a story like thisvappearsvonceva month http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/news/sexual-battery-leads-to-arrest-of-assisted-living-/nY8Qh/
