Just read in the newspaper that a "state of the art, facility for Alzeimer Patients" has been raided in North Georgia. The facility outside of Atlanta was raided and all employee's vehicle searched. The raid resulted in 27 employees being charged with assault and in some cases id theft. The investigation was started by an employee and after she came forward, several family members filed charges. As a result of the raid, three of the patients had to be hospitalized due to neglect. I am just sickened by this!! Our loved ones deserve better. There were reports of water being thrown on patients and patients being slapped. Also it was policy to "double diaper" the patients to cut down on clean ups!!! Some of the staff were convicted felons. Some had prior convictions for assualt and identity theft.

This is TERRIBLE and I am glad that they were charged. I am an HR Director (retired) who conducted background checks on ALL people who were offered employment. All places of employment where our LO's are vulnerable should conduct background checks but many do not. Background checks are certainly not foolproof and can only provide a person's history in the US. But at least it's a start.

Every time I hear about something like this, it makes me want to keep my DH safe at home. How can we know how they are treated when we're not there? On the other hand, though, caregiving is getting harder, I'm not getting good restful sleep and am not feeling as strong and well as I should be. This disease just keeps going on and on and on and we begin to get desperate for some relief.

I read about this, sickening! Dazed, this is the very reason why I am so involved and go in daily. Abuse and neglect can only get to this point if nobody is there checking in on these poor souls. I agree that a lot could have been prevented if they had just done background checks. One would think that would be mandatory! It is at Lynn's facility.
