Someone on the facebook site posted an article about J147. I first heard of this compound in April 2012 here:
“Alzheimer's Drug May Be First to Prevent the Disease's Progression”
    http://trumbull.patch.com/groups/editors-picks/p/alzheimer-s-drug-may-be-first-to-prevent-the-disease-d2a2f6216e

More recently we were updated with this news:
“Curry Derivative J147 Beats Aricept for Alzheimer's”
    http://www.alzheimersweekly.com/2013/05/curry-derivative-j147-beats-aricept-for.html

J147 is a manufactured form of curcumin, which is a component of turmeric – a spice. Turmeric has incredible health benefits, not just for memory impairment, but also for just about anything that ails you. See here: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=78

It’s not effective in pill form because it is not water soluble; it is fat soluble. I found this recipe for a turmeric drink, which provides the fat in the healthy form of almond milk:

Dr. Sanjay Gupta's Calming Creamy Turmeric Tea:
    Ingredients
    1 cup almond milk
    1/2 tsp turmeric
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp honey
    1/4 tsp ginger

Directions: Heat the almond milk in a microwave, stir in the spices and drizzle the honey on top. Enjoy!
[We are actually halving all but the turmeric and serving as 4 ounces which is easier to get down than 8 ounces.]

DH wanted to just start taking the drink, and “if it works, it works, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.” If it were a pill I might go along with that, but since this involves some expense and some mess, I want to know whether it is helping him or not. Also, as with all things, there are possible side effects and drug interactions. They are listed here: http://voices.yahoo.com/side-effects-aware-taking-turmeric-5749704.html?cat=5

The only way to ascertain whether the turmeric is helping is to take some sort of cognitive test now and then repeat the test after a specified period of time. Unfortunately DH is unreceptive to testing - that’s the understatement of the century! So after a day of back and forth, arguing and frustration, I sprinkled the truth with a little bit of deception and a little bit of coercion, and he finally came around and agreed to “a brain game.” I used the DMS48 test. It is not threatening – as I told DH, “all you are doing is looking at pictures!” The test can be downloaded here: http://cerco.ups-tlse.fr/~DMS48/

They experts say there is almost no dementia found in the population of India. Which has tumeric in most of thier dishes. But then the life span of the population isn't that long either. So who knows. I know our SAD way of eating can have a real effect on brain function. Plus the western population a generation ago didn't live to the ages we are now living. Maybe it's just that our bodies are outliving our brains. Something to think about.

I wouldn't say almost no dementia the the following article is interesting: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8492918.stm

According to The Hindu India is expected to overtake the US in reported number of case of dementia.
