This morning I was determined to get Kathryn to eat something that would be better for her. I knew she would only eat a couple of bites of whatever I gave her so it had to be packed with things that might better for her. I make myself a Bacon, Egg and Cheese muffins each morning using a microwave egg poacher and came up with an idea. I used my microwave egg poacher to make Kathryn an omelet. It will poach an egg in just 60 seconds and all you have to do is add whatever your loved one liked in their omelets. Here is what I made for Kathryn today:
I put ½ teaspoon of water in each space One egg in each space One slice of precooked bacon (comes already cooked at the store and has less grease) chopped up. Half a slice of cheese broken up.
I missed it all together and cooked it for 60 seconds in the microwave.
When complete I let it cool for a minute and then put it on a small plate and cut it up into six pieces like you would cut a pie.
Kathryn only ate three pieces but I think it was better for her then just a couple of cookies or a small amount of fruit.
I followed it up with a small can of peaches in all it's syrup. She ate about half of the peaches which is what she ate when that was all she got also.
I think many of us may have little things we do to help our Loved Ones eat better (no more). I do not force Kathryn to eat at all because forcing her to eat has it's own risk. I think it might be helpful to post recipes we have tried with success for everyone else to use if they will be of help to them.
Jim, I am delighted to hear you had success! Lynn has been on an all pureed diet for several years now. It is just regular food pureed. Perhaps this would be easier for Kathryn to eat?
Another thing they have at the nursing home is an ice cream (more pudding texture when thawed) called Magic Cups, they are loaded with nutrition, vitamins and protein. When Lynn would eat nothing else, he still loved them. http://www.hormelhealthlabs.com/2colTemplate_product.aspx?page=CO_MagicCupSupp&cond_id=141&cat_id=146
Perhaps Hospice could help you obtain TwoCal HN.... http://abbottnutrition.com/brands/products/twocal-hn "•TWOCAL® HN is a nutritionally complete, high-calorie formula designed to meet the increased protein and calorie needs of stressed patients and patients requiring low-volume feedings." When Lynn was having such a difficult time eating, this worked wonderful for him.
