Yes, the first Christmas Eve alone. It shouldn't have come as a surprise because all of us if we live long enough will most likely have had that experience. He wouldn't let me go gently either when I left after 6 hours today. One family came in the earlier part of the day (We have 3 sons) and brought dinner and gifts. That brought joy and warmth to our hearts. It was wonderful! But I also was diagnosed last Friday with Macular Degeneration in both eyes - one with dry, and one with both wet and dry. So I am doing a pity party on myself again. I had planned on reading during my spare time as I grew older. Being told by the Home that I should only come to visit my husband only 2 or 3 times a week also is a blow. His wandering around looking for me increases if I'm there more often. So sad. One other thing, I observed a moment of absolute beauty at the nursing home today during the Christmas Service. A not very good looking looking daughter sidled up to embrace her tremoring Mother in a wheel chair before the service started and the expression of pure love on both of their faces transcended any physical unsightlyness that had come to them. I learned something about both beauty and love..... and thanks and blessings to all of you good people!
midwestmn, so very sorry to hear of your macular. I surely hope it can be treated. Glad to hear your family was there today and I'm sure it's tough on you that you can't visit your DH any time you like. Your story is timely, especially for today! Blessings.
PTL that this condition can be treated. I pray that you are working with gifted doctors and that they will have you well on the way to seeing everything for all the rest of the years of your life.
What would I do without you? Your replies are really comforting . I will try to find out more about treatments for my eye issues on the internet. Now if there only new and effective treatments for my husband's Ahlziemer's.
WET macular degeneration can be stopped by periodic shots in the eye (which don't hurt), but there is no help availabe for DRY macular degeneration. It was ironic that my very healthy DH, who had been an eye doctor, developed the wet kind in one eye, the only thing that was ever wrong with him except for Alzheimers. Thank goodness for Medicare's full coverage of the cost for the shots, which were around 3 thousand each few weeks or months.
