Somewhere in one of these discussions, I read that the VA had nursing homes at a much reduced costs than private facilities. I decided to do some investigation as future financial challenges weigh greatly on my mind. I spoke to the admissions director at the local VA Home. It is a beautiful facility. She told me that you can transfer assests up to the day before admission so that your spouse has no assests in his name. His costs would then be done on a percentage basis based on his social security and very small pension. They could also allocate funds to me out of his income to live. The waiting period for admission is one year. So plan ahead. I asked the total monthly costs if one had to pay the full amount and she said $7,500.00. Wow is that expensive!
Years ago our banker recommended getting long term health insurance which would pay for home care and a nursing home. Fortunately we have that, but the funds could run out as they have a cap on the amount paid. I was relieved to know what the VA offered if we were to ever need to draw on their facilities. I also have a call into our local county VA officer to learn of any other benefits he might have. I believe they pay for adult day care or a portion of it. We aren't to that place now, but I feel much better learning out what our options are for the future. I thought this might benefit others on this site. God be with you
We are in Illinois. The VA pays for 3 days of day care for my husband. Without their help, I would not be able to afford the fee. I haven't really looked into the VA nursing homes yet.
I'm from the QuadCities. My mom is getting help in assisted living through a VA widow benefit. It took a long time to get it through but it was worth it. There is alot of benefits for veterans. We are in Minnesota. I have a call into our county VA officer to find out more about the benefits.
I was told that if qualified Medicaid would pay for the VA and we will qualify unless I win the lottery in which case I could self pay. My FIL was in a VA Alzheimer's unit and it was paid by medicaid.
