ok, so i have searched but maybe missed a link. Bobby had to go into the hospital in july this year with cellulitis on both of his legs. he was given a very strong iv antibiotic for 4 days then came home on another one for 10 more days . for several weeks to a month maybe he would call people by name , was more alert, had a bit more of a sparkle in his eyes and seemed to follow the conversation more. i am not talking about getting back to baseline before the cellulitis but getting back to where he was almost a year ago. anyway things started to fade again, and then two weeks ago we went back tot he dr for the rash coming back on his legs the way it started in july. the dr gave him two antibiotics to take for 10 days once again , he is more alert , laughs, call out names of people when they enter the room. has anyone had this happen with there spouses. i want to speak to the dr when we go again 10-4 . this is bobby a yr ago except he is still incontient , is there something to this. i read on a site called antibiotics for.com , then alz. there was a study about anitbiotics and how it helped some people but they did not know why.
In a bizarre way, it makes sense. The build-up of the plaque on the neurons in their brains is not supposed to be there so maybe the antibiotics affect that. Lord, now we all want antibiotics!!!
If he had the cellulitis for some time that could have lowered his cognitive abilities. The improvements could have come from the relief of being cured of cellulitis. Just like how our spouses do worse when they have a UTI or get a virus.
Could always be something else.
BTW, there are doubts that the plaque is the cause of Alz, some researchers think that the plaques are the brain's defense against the true clause of Alz. I remember one hopeful Alz drug that combatted the plaques and in trials the people taking the drug did worse than the control group.
Paulc I remember reading the same thing about the plaque formation. Seems every step forward leads to two steps back to square one. Marty-any thoughts?
my DH Always seemed much improved after a round of antibiotics. i have documented it now over 5yrs and his cognitive abilities are much more lucid. of course his is UTI and if he had any infection that will bring the abilities down because of the infections or fever. so its a catch 22 why they help but in our case a most definate yes here. we give evry 3 mos due to ongoing utis and prostrate issues so its easy to observe. divvi
when he was in the hospital he was on Vancomycin, very strong they can only give it a short period of time or it will burn the vein. then came home on bactrim for 10 days. this time he was on 10 days of Rifampin 300mg and Bactrim 200mg both 2 times a day. the cellulitus was not something that had been coming on for a while it was from a fall that he skinned his lower legs real bad on concrete around a baby pool at the beach. so there was no decline as if a uti coming on for several weeks.
So glad to find this info and confirm that what we are experiencing isn't a figment of my imagination. Hb has had 4 uti's since March and I asked the dr. about maintenance antibiotics after doing some research. He is on 250mg of cipro once daily and for the past wk. I have noticed a difference late in the day, more clarity. Haven't had the delusions and hallucinations, he seems better able to articulate what he is trying to say. He just seems to stay more present. I, too, am documenting the changes. Could this be the cure for sundowning???
thanks td for the link. i printed it off and the antibiotics for .com to take to the neurologist . he agreed with the artilcles but of course does not agree to giving long term antibiotics or even short term unless there is a medical reason. so we now have a medical reason another skin infection so 15 days of doxycycline with a refill if needed. we will see where that gets us if any improvement. andy i sent you an email today sorry been sort of out of it the last couple of weeks lots of drs appts and a vein lazer today. thanks for all of you alls input!!
