I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere, but has anyone dealt with scabs on the scalp? Yes, it is gross, but I'm wondering how it can be treated. I've used baby oil and a toothbrush on my husband's scalp, but then tend to return. I am also wondering if the aides actually wash the shampoo out of his hair. His doctor doesn't have a clue.....

    Thanks!

if it were me i'd wash his hair with a mild baby shampoo like they do to treat 'cradle cap' which alot of babies get. its crusty like sores that form on the scalp. leaving baby oil in the hair may be making it worse. it needs to be clean and wash often with a gently shampoo like the baby kind wihtout alot of additives. if its too bad the dr can rx a script for a prescription fungal type shampoo to help clear it up. make sure its not ringworm or something more serious. if they arent rinsing the shampoo out well it can cause irritation too. if the baby shampoo doesnt work maybe one of the dandruff like selsun would help but try the baby one first and let the scabs soak then wash every other day to see. hope it gets better.

Actually, he is using a prescription shampoo. I have also tried all kinds of shampoos. I've been told that with AD, the oil glands can produce too much or not enough oil. Believe it or not, I've had to ask the doctor to write a prescription for bathing! They only offer 1 day a week, which I find horrible. (EOAD) I have insisted on every other day. Of course, they love to have ME do it instead. That is far too difficult at this point, but maybe I could try again.---Last night I put warm compresses on his head. Great look! lol

Could be a contact dermatitis caused by harsh detergents used in the NH's laundry

There are also waterless shampoo you can get. You could use this when you go in to see him - use in between his bathing.

Ann, I cannot believe that bathing 1 day/week is acceptable in an NH. No wonder they get sores and all sorts of issues. I assume the bathing once a week meets the state's health standards for nursing homes.

DH's dermatologist suggested the Rinseless Shampoo (from Walmart) when he got the scaly on his scalp. He won't shampoo in the shower, so I use this several times a week. Just squirt it on, lather it up, use a soft brush to brush the scalp - then just towel it off. It has worked well for us.

Vickie, I used that rinseless shampoo when Lloyd was in the hospital. I was amazed at how well it worked and it felt clean and smelled clean, too. I now just take him in the shower with me and have a portable shower nozzle to rinse him. It is still difficult because he is no different than a small child getting water in his face.
