I worked for NASA during Apollo 8, 9, 10, and 11 and was on site during the moon-walk. Neil Armstrong's wife, Jan, was a "Syncronized Swimming Coach', and my daughter was on her team. They lived about a block from us. At the time, every home flew the American Flag day and night while our Astronauts were in the air, and American Pride was exhibited everywhere. All of the NASA people as well as the contractors worked hand in hand getting the job done. I worked with a group of Architectural Engineers and our task was the design and construction of the Lunar Receiving Laboratory, which was where the astronauts would be confined inside a dorm like facility with autoclave doors and sealed walls to isolate the "moon bugs/germs/viruses they might bring back to earth from the moon. As we all know, that was not necessary, but it was there, 'just in case'.
Wonderful time in my life., ... my children love telling stories about how great it was living in that environment during that time in history.
My DH started a company in our garage, eventually he expanded to a 10,000 sq ft bldg & 50 employees. When you heard Armstrong say, "One small step..." it came through a transformer he designed & manufactured that was part of the communication system. It was about the size of 1/4 pack of cigarettes and I still have one from the run that he made. Then it was 'state of the art' today it is obsolete. Every time I hear those words I remember how it all happened, how brilliant he was, what a wonderful man, and then it all went with AD. You also heard 'Houston, we have a problem...' through one of his units. I remember our sitting in front of the TV when they went behind the moon and waiting and waiting to see if the communication system worked. Thankfully it did. Well, that was long ago.
