It looks like our little part of the world may be in the cone of weather trouble. Our local supermarkets do an excellant job of having all needed supplies together in one area-usually right up front of the store. Most crucial for me is extra bottled water and food for Gracie. A while ago I learned that boiling large amounts of water was a real pain. With all the stress of dealing with your house blowing away I will gladly pay the price of bottled water. A great necessity is to stock up on extra chocolate and wine. I hope we are all safe.
bluedaze and anyone else in FLA, I am right over the state line in Valdosta GA, there are right now plenty of motel rooms and lodging avail at Moody AFB (if you have an ID card) I urge any of you to go ahead and make reservations here or a little further north in Tifton. If you wait until Tues or Wed.(28th or 29th) They will all be taken. I would welcome any of you into my home if the circumstances were different with DH. Let me know if you need help in finding lodging early. You can always cancel if the storm takes another path. It looks like another on is on Issac's heels. The most important thing is MEDICATION. If your meds are low or your loved ones meds are low, get them filled now so you can leave in a hurry. I always tell DH that if I have his meds we can run!!!!!!!! I can purchase anything else at walgreens.
First thing this morning-right after aerobics I picked up two cases of water. No one seemed concerned about the storms-another one is right behind Isaac. My neighbor is cranking up his generator to make sure we will have power. We are not in a relocate area so will stay put. I have little patience with those who think some one else will take care of them. My neighbors will look after each other. Last big hit we gathered in the street and traded cell phones to reach family. Some servers worked better than others in different locals.
I just checked the nocca website. Unless Issac take a turn when he hits Cuba all of Florida is expected to he affected and of course we do not know yet about the second punch.
Our building has hurricane windows throughout that can withstand 160 mph winds. Actually, the west coast of Florida has only been hit by hurricanes 5 times in the last 120 years, so, while we're all cautious, we generally stay pretty calm.
Pris-I remember all too well the no name storm when I lived in Bradenton. I island of Anna Maria was under water. I was the Island nurse and when I was finally allowed back on I thought everything looked just fine. It did from the front. The ocean side of many of the homes had been washed away leaving only a facade like in old westerns. Take care.
Looks like Isaac is headed to the Gulf now. Last I heard, we won't get much more than some rain and maybe a little breeze in North Palm Beach County - so no worries, Nora!
The storm behind it is expected to turn to the mid-Atlantic.
But that water will come in handy down the road, perhaps!
Welcome to Gulf Coast area Grace. I am watching Issac carefully. I am supposed to move from my tempory townhouse to a Villa across the street next week. I am only 20 miles to Gulf Shores so keep me in your prayers.
Bama - hope you are doing well in your new home. We'll miss coming this Feb. dh really would be mixed up if we were in yet another place. He doesn't recognize this house we've lived in 26 yrs. We were at Gulf Shores once when a hurricane came - don't remember now the name - but we had to leave before our rental time was up but they let us return a month later for the rest of our time. Be safe ! Hope it passes on by but leaves the rain. I'm sure it is needed there, too.
Just in-Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency and officials urged vacationers to leave the Florida Keys, after forecasters expanded hurricane warnings and watches for parts of Florida, just as the Republican Party gathers for its national convention in Tampa.
CBS News hurricane consultant David Bernard reports there is great concern in South Florida and the Keys - and for the rest of the peninsula as well - as the storm approaches.
We've had friends down from Boston here since Thursday. They are scheduled to leave out of West Palm tomorrow at 3:45. Don't think they're going to make it. I had told them August wasn't a good time to come, but people who don't live here don't think they need to worry about the possibility of hurricanes. Surprise!
I don't care what the weather maps says-I'm getting slammed. Black skies, horizontal rain, fierce wind and then the sun comes out. Flooding is already an issue. My favorite hanging baskets that were too heavy for me to take down are now on the ground. Gracie is peacefully snoozing.
Stay safe, Bluedaze.. I think Gracie is telling you it's going to be OK. Animals have a special sense about these things. I'm told they even seem to sense an earthquake before it happens. I hope your (formerly) hanging baskets make it through. I know those horizontal rains all too well. Hope your electricity stays on.
We've been calm most of the day. Some periods of rain, a little bit of a breeze. I ran to Publix in between rain bands. Left DH home and in bed.
My dogs are snoozing as well, Nora! Guess it's that kind of day to curl up and nap, read a book ... I'm baking, doing laundry and about to (finally) get to the Sunday paper. Weather Channel on in the background.
I've never seen so much made of a storm that hasn't even reached hurricane strength yet!
Schools in Palm Beach County have NOT been canceled tomorrow. Bet the kids are mad!
4:40 pm Am right on the ocean PB Cty. We in the middle of a band that has dumped 2" of rain in ten min. I have a gage on my terrace. Winds starting to roar that all too familiar hurricane sound ...can't see our pool 40 ft away the rain is blowing so hard
I don't think I'll make my hospice and hospital clergy visits tomorrow-roads too flooded. At least I can walk to my respite family. Snails all over my walk ways-they would drown in the grass.
This storm is a monster, forget what they are calling it,. it has a mind of it's own. I hope that all have evacuated that need to. It has slowed down to 7mph in movement and can now turn its ugly head in any direction. Please everyone be careful, stay indoors and off the flooded streets.
Things have calmed down here on the Southeast Coast of Florida. No flooding in my neighborhood, but around the corner where Bluedaze lives is a different story. It's clearing up outside. I can see the sun.
If I were alone, I would be so out of here during the months of July, August, and September. I would spend those months in San Francisco with my son. And then probably get caught in an earthquake.
I stupidly drove to the market. Not until I was committed to the turn did I see the disaster in the boat launch-er-parking lot. Two cars were bobbing in the water. I couldn't back out and sure as heck couldn't go forward. I very slowly exited the wrong way out-no one was around and got home.
Sid's pain pills are in the pharmacy in the market bluedaze* is talking about. I drove by there this morning, and couldn't believe what it looked like. Luckily, I have enough pills left for a couple of days, which had better be enough time to drain that lake-er-parking lot. So this is what "not a hurricane" does to most of the east coast of Florida. I am thankful we have power. It is scorching hot with maximum humidity outside now. I just came in from the gym and Walmart, and I am here to stay. Not going out unless I have to. The bus is bringing Sid home from DC.
The upside to being inside is that I am getting a head start on my holiday knitting.
I know when I came from Ohio to Florida and stayed 2 months instead of 2 weeks, Walgreen's just transferred Lloyd's prescriptions and filled them. When we came home, we just transferred them back. My grandson Sebastian was stationed in Pensacola. They were evacuated a couple days ago to Georgia and are now bunking in a hangar...around 500 of 'em on cots in that heat. Poor baby!
Oh, wait, there are 1500 sailors in an air hangar in Georgia in 90 degree heat with 10 showers and 9 porta-potties. Can you imagine? Kinda sounds like the people, loaves, and fishes story.
Linda MC I am in South Georgia is he any where near Moody AFB? Yes it is hot hot hot but everytime I think about how hot I am I remember how hot all our service members in Afganistan in full armour. Now that is hot!!! He should be back on his way to Pensacola soon if not already. The storm has passed there.
Shellseeker50, Sebastian never said where he was but I would guess it would have been South Georgia. I sure do miss him. He was such a huge help with his Grandpa.
Yeap I know exactly where he was. There is not much around there at all. It used to be a marine depot. He was on the ALA/GA line. Probably saw alot of gnats and mosquitos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Funny! Linda Mc and Shellseeker50: There definitely is an Albany GA! Lived there in 1959 for a couple years while former husband was in the air force. Was an AF base at that time. Hard to find a good job there because they knew you wouldn't be there long - so worked in retail while there. My sister met her husband there while on a visit to us! small world.
