My husband has not driven for many years but I kept his drivers license active. We can no longer renew it online. There was a new law passed in our state that requires 3 forms of id and many hours standing in line, I believe this would also apply to get a state id.
My question is does he really need an id? We may be flying to PA later this year for a wedding and I know they check id to get on the plane. Does it need to be current? Does one need id for a possible hospital stay? I would prefer not spending countless hours in line with him if I don't have to.
I don't know what state you are in but here in Illinois people with disabilities are placed at the head of the line. Senior citizens also do not have to wait as long. I think you do need a valid id for flying and a hospital stay. Just explain your situation to the person at the front desk. Hope this helps.
Trish you will not be able to board a flight without valid (current) photo ID such as a Gov issued photo ID, drivers Linc. or passport In FL you can make anyt appoint with DMV and theses are the Document requirments include: Primary Identification, Proof of Social Security Number, 2 Proofs of Residential Address
Trish, you will probably have to turn in his current drivers license and get a State ID; they will have to take a new picture, but in our state that was all that was required. You really need to do this before his DL expires - will make it a lot easier. Call your local DMV and tell them the circumstances and see what they require.
Hi Trish. You must live in GA. I do and our laws changed this year. I am going to get my DH an Id when his expires. Usually you have to show an ID at the Doctors and hospital and current ID at the airport. I also have a passport for him which would work in place of the other. I am glad that they changed the law in GA. Now they ask you to fill out paper work asksing questions about health issues. It asked about AD and other things. I know that he will not qualify for a license now. That helps me with the driving. He has not driven in 2 years, but the issue is always there. It is my fault. Now I can place the blame on them. I would check and see if there is some other way to get a photo ID than the DMV. They say the lines will become shorter once the process has been in place for awhile. HAHA. Good luck. I am now looking for a medical ID for my DH. That way when we travel if he gets lost they will see it. I am going to put my cell phone on it also. I have a list of medications and phone numbers in his wallet. That works if he remembers to take his wallet.
Thanks for the suggestions about mentioning his disability at the DMV. I'm assuming I need his doctor to write a letter that he has Alzheimers?
Jackie- we do live in Georgia (Atlanta) and I remember how long it took us to get a learners permit for our kids. One day we got there at 6:00 on a Saturday morning and barely made it before they closed.
Applying for an ID Card You must apply in person at a driver's license customer service center. The cost for an ID card is the same as for renewing a driver's license:
$20 for five years $32 for eight years To apply for an ID card, you must prove your Georgia residence by providing at least one of the following:
Utility bill in your name with a Georgia residence listed Bank statement in your name with a Georgia residence listed Employer verification (pay stub and W-2 are two examples) Georgia driver's license issued to your parent, guardian, or spouse You are required to surrender all previous driver's licenses, ID cards, and learner's permits at the time of application for the ID. If they are not in your possession, you must provide a certified copy of a motor vehicle report or a status letter from your previous state. You may keep your ID if and when your license is reinstated.
You will also need to provide proof of identity by presenting one or more of the following documents:
Certified original or certified copy of birth certificate Certificate of birth registration Certified copy of court records for name changes, adoptions, or sex changes Certified naturalization papers Immigration ID card Valid passport Georgia does not require you to furnish your Social Security card, although you will need to provide the number. If you provide an incorrect number, severe penalties could occur.
L has a state identity card, got it when her license came up for renewal. Fortunately she has always had a current passport so getting the ID was simple. Never need the Social Security card though we sometimes need the SS number. I never thought of asking to get to the head of the line.
I would go for the ID before the license expires. It seems to go much easier that way. My daughter never got a license and when she got a permit or ID she would let it expire before getting a new one - always included more paperwork.
If he is a Veteran try contacting them for ID. I know when you have medical through them you have to get an ID card.
When DH's license was up this year, it could not be renewed online. I made an appointment at the DMV and his aide took him. He got a state ID rather than a license.
He made a little fuss at first ... but then became reconciled to it. He also has a current passport for ID purposes.
