Now that I am alone I purchased the the 5StarEmergencyResponse system. I bought this one because I can use it at home or take it with me to use if I should need it. There no contract and it is $14.99 a month. John Walsh advertises it on America's Most Wanted and there was an ad recently in the local paper. I had thought about getting something but as far as I could tell most are only good for home use and they cost twice as much for the monthly fee. If anyone needs more info just post here and I will be glad to give you as much as I can.
Jean, we have the Senior Safety Alert system - $23.95 per mon., no contract, movable, etc. However, Dh can't use it now and I was looking for something else just for me. This sounds great. I checked out their web-site. Like the idea of being able to carry it with you wherever you go. Thanks for the info.
Vickie just as you mentioned, I got the 5star for myself, not for DW. She's incapable of understanding what the devise is, nor does she the ability to activate or communicate should something happen to me. I carry it with the hope and anticipation that I will have a moment to activate it should the need arise. Thus far I've had no need, so I can't offer any comment as to how well it works. We are fortunate to have an emergency call button in our apartment to our front desk personnel in the event of an emergency. DW has no concept of what the call button is nor would she capable of activating it in an emergency. Recently a resident with MS used the button to call for help and the doorman recognized the need for, and performed, the Heimlich maneuver and literally saved the mans life.
Just another person who has no idea about Alz. When I was on the phone with the rep I told her my DH was in Alz. facility which is why I wanted this for myself. She asked if I wanted one for my DH!!!! I told her he couldn't even use a TV remote and he was in a place where other people took care of him.
bluedaze* Did your friend get the 5Star? The one I have is about 1inch by 2 inches and you can use a clip or a small hook. I don't think it has GPS and it certainly isn't heavy.
And it does have GPS - they can find where you are when you push the button. And if give your emergency contact permission to access your account via computer, they can also track you.
Thank you so much for posting this! I live in the country, no one can see or hear us and I do the outside chores and am often several acres away from the house. Have wondered what would happen if I should have an emergency. My sister who lives alone is in the same boat and I just forwarded the info to her. I think this is a must have for us. Mary
Sid's name came up on some list related to whatever program funds his DC, and they came out to the house and installed one.
There are more sophisticated ones now that are sensitive to falls. When the person falls, the unit around their neck senses it, and automatically calls for help. That is a good feature for AD patients who may not remember to press the button.
