I know this is a taboo subject, but when I get especially frustrated a glass of wine helps A lot! I also know the dangers. But say once every week it should be alright. Be truthful if you reply. I am a Christian. Jesus made wine for the wedding guests.
  1.
I'm not a drinker, wine or otherwise, but I can't see any problem with an occasional drink. Don't doctors say that a glass of red wine is benefical to a person?

Why would this be taboo. Being a caregiver has resulted in my not drinking for a few reasons, and I never drank much anyway. But I wouldn't deny others, I don't see how a glass a week would hurt.

And ignore those studies about the benefits of red wine and chocolate. Let's just say that the promoters of those studies put a spin on them.
  2.
midwestn, both DH and I usually have a glass of wine before dinner. Sometimes I don't have one - depending on how DH is doing. I started watering down his - but he caught on, said something was wrong with that wine! Everything in moderation - and whatever relaxes you!

I don't agree with you, paulc, I believe red wine and certain dark chocolate do have benefits, and I indulge in both. LOL

I'll drink to that, midwestmn. One a day is good for your health, so they say. I often feel like a glass of wine myself. My problem is, it keeps me from sleeping. I got little enough of that as it was. I would have to have my wine in the morning. That would give it time to wear off before bedtime. Enjoy it and relax.
  3.
Taboo? midwesmn: No justifications are necessary! We've all been dealt an impossible hand, whatever it takes to play this nowin hand as best we can is not to questioned by anyone, but yourself whatever you're comfortable with is just fine.
We've always had wine with dinner, not for any health, or intoxicant reasons, it's just always our beverage on the table.
When things get tough and DW is really hyperactive with Sundowning, for me, it's your basic Absolute on the rocks and Marinol in it's natural form for DW + her favorite music. Somehow music can frequently transport her to a different "world", far from whatever has her so agitated. The sound of "her" music has stopped DW's frantic rummaging and non-stop pacing. Not having to watch that going on, what more as to how much it helps reduce my stress level?
  4.
I don't drink right now. I am the designated driver 24/7. But I often say if I could only have a bottle of vodka and a straw! I don't see anything wrong with a drink or two. My drink now is coffee. But some day.......
  5.
    Wine makes me nicer.

Thinking about marinol in its "natural form", for um...him?

Anyway , wine is good for you in moderate amounts. As for taboo subjects, those flew out the window when AD come along.

I don't drink. My drug of choice is chocolate. Lots of it. Milk chocolate, not dark. Raises those seratonin levels through the roof. Which is why I have a closet full of clothes that don't fit.

My wife and I would occasionally have a glass of wine with dinner. We don't do that anymore, but I am now having a glass of red wine and piece of dark chocolate while watching TV before going to bed. I agree with Vickie - red wine and dark chocolate do have some benefits.

In reply to midwestmn, last Sunday we had a guest minister in our church (Congregational). He started out by reminding us that he is a Baptist. His sermon topic was on wine and how it fit into the culture of the day, including that Jesus's first miracle was turning water into wine.

    " But some day......."

That describes so much of my life.

Some day I'll drink martinis again. I was just starting to learn to drink them shortly before the FTD dx.
  7.
Like Joan, I don't drink but need that daily dose of chocolate. I can make a handful of M&M's last all afternoon. Just let them melt slowly and ease the tension and stress.

I too handle the stress with chocolate. As a matter of fact I just finished a couple reeses peanut butter cups :) Reeses cups are actually hips in the larva phase.

I don't drink alcohol only because of a strong family predilection towards excess. And I think there isn't enough alcohol in the world to better this situation.

[BTW, midwestmn, if you want biblical reassurance that a little is ok - here you go: http://www.gotquestions.org/sin-alcohol.html So enjoy it, guilt free!]

A daily glass of wine for women is also now associated with decreased risk of osteoporosis. I won't apologize for the fact that I look forward to it nightly!

    I'm right with you, Emily.
Love some wine. I don't drink a glass every night, but I wish I did! :)

My sister and her husband both lowered their cholesterol drinking red. She insists there was no other reason for the numbers to drop.

I also believe red wine and dark chocolate are good for you. Together - yum!

What a relief to hear that there are no taboo subjects here. Within reason that is. Nevertheless it is freeing to hear this. Anonymoty - you can't beat it! The thing with local Ahlzheimer's groups - there are taboo subjects. Especially when you've had some of of the younger members in a school situation. Here one is likely to get the straight goods as there's no reason for anyone to feed any baloney.

We both have wine with dinner most nights. He prefers Reisling and I dilute it by about a third. Mine is red and I dilute it about half but that way I can have a second one :-)

Wine - the component in red wine that is good for you is also in Peanuts and Peanut Butter. In fact, from recent reports there is more in peanut butter than wine. So, take your choice. Must be dark chocolate too but I am not fond of it - milk chocolate lady.

midwestmn - the Bible says to not drink to drunkenness, not do not drink at all. Good advice for everyone.

Which component do you mean, Charlotte?
    Antioxidants?
You can get those from other things - less fattening than peanuts.

Most people are referring to studies about resveratrol - in red wine - thought to prevent blood clots, lower cholesterol and help prevent damage to blood vessels.

No, the resveratrol. Foods that are a good source are: Red Wine and Red Grapes, Peanuts and Peanut Butter, Cocoa Powder and Dark Chocolate, Mulberries, and Blueberries.

Chilled Pinot Grigio on a hot summer night sounds pretty good!

We should all toast one another for getting through another day.

Since wine is not not a taboo sort of thing....how about we have a virtual wine tasting party? We can suggest a menu and wines..and judge..do they have legs? bouquet, flavors...etc...might be fun especially for those of us not getting invited anywhere anymore or going on any trips this summer...
what say you? WE could make it in conjunction with a BBQ!!!
  13.
Ohio has the Breitenbach winery and they have the best red wine - Roadhouse Red. Got some in the closet and when I am convinced I won't suck down the entire bottle, I will have a glass. Until then, I may go on Charlotte's diet.

I prefer wine coolers. Wine tends to give me a headache, but if I dilute it with 7UP or something like that it's fine. Haven't had one in a while. Guess I'll buy a bottle of wine today!

I only get a headache when I drink domestic wines, Elaine.
I have been drinking Australian and New Zealand wines with no problemo!

Wine makes me sleepy and then thirsty as all get out! When we were in Germany we went on a wine tasting tour with friends. The only wine I really liked a had a picture on the label of an old lady with a boy across her knee spanking him! I have no idea what the name was....maybe I had too much wine. LOL
  16.
I'm headed for Australia in 2013-be prepared to place your orders for wine. By the way-friends from Australia were in the US. Like me they enjoy Yellow Tail wines which are made in Australia. They found the wine so much cheaper here that they sent cases home. Go figure!

Don't know about the taboo point of this conversation. I am one who gets major headaches when I drink any wine. Just felt that it was only fair to share that I allow myself a few beers now and then. Especially when on poop patrol, where I get physically sick to my stomach, and very taxed. I reward myself with two Corona beers. Somehow, it makes it easier to expect the next time. Yep, I feel much better, and yep, I limit myself to two. (Although three weeks ago, I was on two poop patrols on the same day and rewarded my self accordingly, and admit I had a wonderful day.) I realize I need to keep myself in check, but thought I would share this little secret. I know it is so important to be able to drive, care for my DH, and not make exceptions to my rules, but felt the need to let you know the boundaries I have set for myself. I am careful and able to meet any emergency, which is a must for myself that I need to be comfortable with. I wonder if any of you are doing the same. It is a difficult 'limit' to place on yourself, but somehow I am able to do so, for both of our sakes. Hope you all don't think I'm a bad girl, cuz I am so very careful. Just say'n!!

I miss my grandpa's homemade Dago Red wine. WE always had it growing up,somtimes I even took it to school in my thermos, that's how good it was. Now I prefer a good cold Rolling Rock once in a while. Wine is bad for my migraines.
  17.
taboo? A couple of drinks? I do agree not to get drunk especially as we are caregivers, however, like you janny, I love my TWO beers. I did not have any tonight, but if I had, I would have had three because we had a nasty poop patrol..
  18.
For 32 years I would not drink if I thought I was going to drive at all. I did the paper route and drove for a living and could not risk any trouble. But now that I have stopped working, I am thinking about relaxing my self imposed rule. And the family joke now is, when DD gets her drivers license she can drive me to the liquor store. I know we are a strange family. Really in the last 3 years I have only had 2 drinks. I would much rather have chocolate or a Starbucks. Or a chocolate martini :) Or a Starbucks with some Kahlua in it.
Some days just call for a drink. And all I can say is cheers!!!!!
