Has anyone here installed gadgets on your faucets to keep them from being left running all night? If there is one you recommend could you share the name of it with me? Thanks!
What a familiar recall. I'd find faucets running everywhere! I couldn't teach him to remember to turn off the faucets, but I did learn to remove the stoppers from the sinks in the bathroom, so they wouldn't overflow. Just one more thing we had to learn to 'listen for' or double check on. Again, it reminds me of how we watched our toddlers. Exactly the same thing. Flush the toilet after they finished., turn off the water, .. and, in my case, hide his after shave. I used to have it on the mirror tray on the vanity top, until he began using it for mouthwash! Can you just imagine.
I changed the shower from hot & cold faucets to single lever temp controlled and installed auto off faucets in the bathroom sink. Water will run for 30 sec. then turn off, like in airports. It was expensive, requiring I replace the tile wall in the shower, but the hot water is no left longer running for hours. It worked out about 90% of the time
I haven't heard of anything to keep the faucets from running but sure would like to. He gets it mostly off, its just running in a fine stream so I don't hear it.. We have a well and I sure don't want to run it dry.
Nancy, yes I can imagine him using the after shave for mouthwash. My DH told me the mouthwash had "spoiled". He finally showed me the bottle and it was Dial liquid soap!
Do your "auto off faucets" for the sinks, require you to only get warm water? I was looking around on the internet and the ones I saw look like you set the water to your comfort and that is what you get every time. That seems weird to me. I want warm water to wash hands, but colder to brush. I just need something that will shut it all off when DH forgets...is that possible? Auto shut off, but still able to control temperature?
Mary, do you have water shutoff valves (faucet handles) under your sink to shut the water off with? It would be a hassle to turn the water on and off, but at least at nite he couldn't turn the water on and leave it running.
Lloyd sometimes turns on the water for no reason. Thank God I catch it right away. Jean21, I just had to laugh when I read about the denture tablet in his mouth. Well, at least you didn't have to fight to get his teeth out that day. I have to do all that. Take 'em out, brush, soak his teeth, put 'em back in.....find 'em. He won't take them out to clean, but he can take them out and lose them.
How about putting locks on the bathroom door so he can't get in near the water area. I know it would be a problem for you...but, maybe he will not want to do this for a very long time...you know?..."This too shall pass".
My sister has a bathroom faucet that you flip a 'clip' on the spout and even if turning the water handles, you will not get any water. It took me a while to figure it out. Don't know if they sell them anymore.
This URL has a whole assortment of auto turn off faucets. The temp on the sink faucet is adjustable. The shower faucet is set to a predetermined mix of hot and cold water.
Dh left the water running in his bathroom sink long before I realized that he was ill. Even with an overflow slot it still reached the top and onto the vanity top I caught it just before it spilled over onto the floor. Now I watch when he is shaving, etc. at night. Oh my though he constantly turns the outside water on and puts the hose in the flower beds right in front of the garage. We have never had water into the garage but only because the sidewalk is higher right in front of the garage door so acts as a dam. I try to watch to see if the faucet handle is up when he is outside. The flowers (lilies) have bloomed and don't need so much water now. We aren't getting any rain and everything is bone dry and dead except right around the garage door of course ;) I'm going to call my plumber friend and ask about a regulator on the shower. Every night dh turns it on full hot and then down to what he wants but I'm afraid one night he might just step in without turning it down.
Flo - you can always take the handle off then he can't turn it on. You can put it high on a nail above the faucet. Most types of water spiget handles are just held on with a screw. You don't need to tighten the screw to use it - just slip over and turn, the hang back up.
So far my only bathroom problem is plugged up toilets from not quite sure what?? Spent all morning clearing them out...too costly to call a plumber every time the bowl nearly overflows...
Mimi, My DH was real good at plugging the toilet. I think it was one of three things...he wouldn't wait a while and let it settle before he would flush again, used tissues instead of toilet paper or used too much toilet paper. Maybe it was all three! I did put a big notice on top of the tank to just flush ONE time and only use TOILET PAPER. It worked but I don't know how long it would have worked since he has now been placed.
Mimi, DH plugged the toilet by flushing all the toiletries from the cabinent down the toilet, including a small flashlight and the toilet bowl cleaner which hangs on the rim of the toilet. I had to call a plumber and yes it was expensive. Now I do not keep anything within his reach.
Girls, there is a gizmo that you can get to keep the lid down on the toilet. My son had to get one because his babies get flushing toys like Hot Wheels. Should work for your flushers, too.
