I thought it interesting that they made the statement that there are NO medications presently which slows down the progress of the disease. I thought that's what Aricept pushes.
On the treatment article, it will be really interesting to see the results of the study on the EOAD family in Columbia. At the Advocacy Forum, it was explained that this is the new direction in AD research. The past and current drug trials have been done on people who are already symptomatic; that means that their brains have already been damaged by the disease and the drugs don't work. The family in Columbia carries the familial EOAD gene, so many of their members will get AD. By enrolling family members who are younger than those normally allowed in drug trials and are asymptomatic (at the present time), the idea is to try to prevent the disease from even getting started.
