Someone was saying that she remembered one of our members was very knowledgeable about Social Security issue, but she couldn't remember her name. I think that is Jane. I understand that Jane is in the worst part of caregiving and is unable to post. Maybe someone else has more recent info. about her.
That was me mary...sorry to hear that Jane is at a very bad part of caregiving. At least, since we haven't heard from her she knows she is not forgotten. Hope that all will be better for her soon. She was so knowledgeable regarding SS requirements.
is the title of the post that Jane used last in early April. You can search for her posts by going to SEARCH at the top of the screen, under TheAlzheimer'sMessageBoards, click on search. Type in Jane: (include the colon). Then click for comments. You'll probably find her postings about Social Security there.
If I remember correctly Jane used to say the SS rules have changed since she worked there so her information may be outdated. Just thought everyone should know and not take what Jane wrote months ago as gospel.
I don't know what you are looking for in regard to SS, but if you log onto the home page - www.thealzheimerspouse.com- and scroll through the left side resources, there is one titled Social Security. There are information and links to follow in there.
mary75* I know that MarilyninMD worked for Social Security for many years & she gave me some tips when I applied for my DH's disability, maybe she can answer your questions too. Joan also had a good idea about the resourses on the home page. Also you can click on the search tab at the top of this page & type in Social Security & see all the previous posts on it.
Elaine--you are right, I did work for SSA (but my program experience is also very old). However, the experience with my husband's disability claim is from 2005, a bit newer.
I seem to remember Jane being well versed in the Medicaid rules.
Jane, when you check in (know you are very busy with your spouse right now)
Right now my husband's SSDI comes the third Wednesday of the month. When he turns 66 in another year (full retirement age) will they change it to the first of the month? Everyone I know gets their SS the first of the month.
Charlotte, a few years ago Soc;. Sec. started sending checks on diffrent dates (a schedule) because having them all go out the 3rd was becoming too unwieldy. My DH's SSDI, started in 1988, Fall, would have had a mid-month pay date, except it was linked to a Medicaid award. Because of that link both ours always came the 3rd. When he reached retirement age, they switched him to regular SS--same amount, same date. Unless they change things, when I reach 66, my SSDI will change to SS--same $, same date.
Charlotte--when my husband reached 65, his SSDI was converted to retirement benefits; it came on the third Weds like your husband and there was no change in the date; the amount was the same.
Charlotte, I've spoken with SS and they too advise me when he reaches full retirement age he will continue to receive the same amount he gets today with SSDI and on the same date (4th Wednesday of every month). Social security adjusted payment dates several years ago to coincide with the Wednesday date closest to the recipients birthdate. For example, dh's birthday is the 31st, so he gets his check on the 4th Wednesday of the month. My birthdate is on the 20th and I get my check on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. This may apply only to new recipients after a certain date but everyone I know who receives ss payments (younger than 70) receives payments on the Wednesday closest to their birthdate.
Charlotte, I hope this helps with your question. Social Security disability, survivor, and retirement benefits are paid in the month after they are due. The benefit payment day is determined by the beneficiaries' birth date.
Benefits paid on
Birth date on
Second Wednesday
1st-10th
Third Wednesday
11th-20th
Fourth Wednesday
21st-31st
If you receive benefits as: •A retired or disabled worker, the payment day will be determined by your birth date. •A spouse, the payment day will be determined by your spouse's birth date. •A survivor, the payment day will be determined by your parent's/spouse's birth date. •A retired or disabled worker and as a spouse, the payment day will be determined by the birth date of the beneficiary of the benefit first received.
Beneficiaries receiving benefits prior to May 1997 or receiving both Social Security benefits and SSI payments will have a payment date of the third of the month. Beneficiaries paid on the third of the month can, under certain circumstances, volunteer to change their payment date but will not be able to choose the payment day. The birth date will determine the new payment day. The decision to volunteer for cycling is permanent but the payment cycle could change if entitlement on a new record occurs.
For a calendar showing payment dates, see the Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments
thank you all - I was just envisioning them changing it to the first of the month which would add a couple more weeks between that particular payday. 5 week months are hard enough. I will stop worrying about that now that I know it will stay the same.
