Current issue of the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter-Can Coconut Oil Treat Alzheimer's. It mentions Dr. Mary Newport and of course her book-The Coconut Oil Miracle. Bottom line-don't assume it's AD and don't self treat. As I've said before coconut oil has it's place-It's great for popping corn and as a skin cream.
We are coconut heads here. When I make the fresh coconut candy each week, I eat a fair bit. I always say, that the coconuts, fresh picked papaya, mangos and bananas, along with the local veggies, are what keep me sane and able to handle this.
Speaking of snake oil , get this. There is a well meaning young man at our market , a raw food guy. He ASSURED me that if I gave DH fresh juiced Marijuana leaves each day, that his disease would most assuredly be reversed. I could not even get mad at him, though I told him that was a pretty big claim.
If I thought it would help, I would do it, but I really don't think it will.
Coco-at least the young man at the market meant well and wasn't implying that you weren't causing the damned disease or doing what needed doing. Perhaps the M juice would help your poor back.
I believe in the use of medical marijuana with somewhat loose standards. But some of the marijuana promoters drive me crazy claiming that it is the cure for everything.
Coco - with the results that Nikki and Linda have seen with marinol, there may well end up being some part of marijuana that will be involved in treating some AD. I say some because I honestly believe there are different causes of for it. We know diabetics are more prone to AD so one type of AD may well be a 'type 3' diabetes. In my husband's case there seems to be a big family tendency. Since we can't afford the gene testing, I can only surmise. Only time will tell what they find as the cause or what will stop the progression or even cure it.
Yes bluedaze* he really did mean well, and that is why he did not get the wrath that stews in me...he was really kind and figured it was 100% true.
Oh man, now I need to go out looking for leaves of cleaned marijuana, the kind that is usually thrown away. There will be a big cauldron brewing and all the freaks in the area will converge...
I have always felt pot should be legal, but that is another story. Don't want to get in a big kerfluffle over it .
I don't know about marijuana, but I do know the synthetic THC in the Marinol has been a miracle for Lynn. The before and after video's speak for themselves.
If marijuana was legal, I have to say I personally would try the raw juicing... I wont get into a whole debate, nor will I try to educate anyone (learned my lesson well) but there IS a wealth of information available.
off topic on the marijuana a bit.. :) but i am once again using the coconut oil in small doses for bowel issues. with bedridden patients they become sluggish and bowels tend to be non responsive. i can surely say the added coconut oil in one teaspoon morning and or night has done wonders, and i have eliminated senokot S now all together and using the virgen compressed coconut oil exclusively. hospice dr was so impressed shes recommending it to other patients with similar problems. cost wise its much cheaper than any of the laxatatives usually used as well.
Well, the thing to keep in mind is that almost every drug we know is based on something that was originally picked from a plant and distilled, boiled, steeped, smoked, or simply chewed on. Like anything--spirits, willow bark, cheese mold--cannabis has properties which can be enjoyable and therapeutic or can be overdone cause ill effects and irresponsible behavior. It is interesting that as a society we attempted then threw off Prohibition, smoked tobacco freely but now are highly educated on the effects of excess, enjoy tea, coffee, and chocolate with abandon, but MJ just occupied a different place in the public consciousness and so came to carry cultural connotations that are hard to separate from the simple fact that it is a plant with some physiological effects.
Oops yes I veered us off topic of the coconut oil.
You know, it really it a good laxative. Not only do we eat a fair bit of fresh coconut, I use it to fry things, (not deep fry) It is the best for frying eggs, and leftover rice . When I eat it I do not have to feel guilty because it truly is so good for us. The other day I used a vegetable oil by mistake, and I am not kidding my stomach hurt for hours. I think most of the commercial oils are likely very bad for you.
And he does go to the bathroom regular, despite taking the seroquel.
There is a brand at Wal Mart that is really good, and way cheaper. It is "natural" though it does not say Virgin. I just use if for cooking. It is 31.5 ounces for just under $7.00, and the brand name is LouAna. I really like it. I do use the more expensive Virgin cold pressed if we want to take it by the spoonful, or it is good on toast, really! An easy way to ingest it.
Ok Divvi you got my attention. We tried this years ago, but now I am intersted in it as a more natural laxative.
Being unable to walk and on pureed food, Lynn too has this problem. Can you please tell me the brand you use and where I can order online. Do you just mix it in with the food? Thanks in advance :)
Coco - I agree that eggs cooked in coconut oil (the brand from wally world you mentioned) are better. I also found by adding some in with pork it adds a nice flavor and they come out moister. He use to use it on bagels instead of butter but I ran out for a while. When I bought some again, he still grabs the margarine. So, I started using it in cooking. Using it for grilled cheese is good too.
http://www.vitacost.com/natures-way-efagold-coconut-oil nikki this is what i am using. its got the mct plus extra virgen cold pressed coconut oil. i use it to cook eggs or in oatmeal at times. but the best way i just gave him a TEASPOON after breakfast for 3 days - then it started working on its own and i stopped til he needed more now i give maybe 2 /week in teaspoon. it tastes ok and he never makes faces when it goes down. i am just elated its working rather all these enemas and suppositories i was using!! its amazing to me how they can get clogged up so easily, and it makes them very uncomfortable so keeping them hydrated and on this is how i am dealing with the constipation now. i am sorry i didnt remember sooner too!!! hope it helps lynn. you can alter dosings once you find what works. just keep up the dose til it works. and it will i promise.. haha good luck. divvi
So this is about coconut oil, but kinda off topic. I love baking bread in my bread machine. Do you think it would be alright if I used coconut oil when the recipe calls for vegetable oil? I think I will do that when I get some at Walmart & let you all know if there is any noticeable difference.
Thank you Divvi!!! The nursing home just started a new policy last week.... on day 3 they give suppositories, on day 4 an enema. EGADS! No one told me, so when I went in on day 3 Lynn was miserable. Poor bugger was suffering intense intestinal cramps and Mamma Bear was pissed! I will do anything I can to try to avoid the suppositories!
Charlotte I have made the grilled cheese in the coco oil and it is fabulous! It is so nice to bite in to a nice crunchy sandwich knowing that it is GOOD for you, you can enjoy eating a bit of oil . Almost like using good old fashioned butter, except it tastes every bit as good and no guilt.
The fried rice is great, just a few cups of leftover rice, heat the oil use lots, then throw in rice. Let it almost burn before you do the first turn, then add fine chopped onion, peppers, veggie of choice, chopped meat optional, and spices. Let it cook a bit till veggies are cooked, then at the last couple of turns splash in some favorite soy or tamari sauce. Yum yum yum
Elaine - if it calls for oil, you will have to melt the coconut oil then use it before it hardens some. I have used it in baking but that is in a recipe that goes right into the oven. It would be like using shortening in a recipe cause even though it says 'oil' it is not liquid.
