Ok, this may sound strange. But I have been a caregiver and basically homebound for so many years that I did not worry about what to wear around the house. Lately, I began looking for comfortable, easy care, AGE APPROPRIATE, clothing (dresses/skirts) and find most are for the 28, slim, tall. The mail order are generally not what I want and have to send back which makes the freight outrageous. I am 70. Any suggestions?
brindle-you're still young. Can you hire a sitter and treat yourself to some time at a local store? Dresses and even skirts are getting hard to find. You're right about the dresses-much too revealing. How about some comfy pants and several bright colored shirts. The season's new colors should do wonders to cheer you up.
Been looking, too. Even pants are low-slung on the hips, wide legs. I did buy two pair of pants last week - not dressy, not real casual, but I can dress them up if necessary. Shoes are another thing - can't find comfortable that looks good too!
Clothes in my closet are about 95% from Christopher and Banks. I can find almost anything I need there so it simplifies my shopping. If you join their Friendship Rewards program (no cost to join) the shipping is free for online orders. FYI I’m 82. My grandkids always called it the “Teacher’s Store”—school teacher styles?
Bealls is a Florida store. Large petite section and you can order on line. http://www.beallsflorida.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/topCategories_10151_-1_12003?cm_mmc=Paid_Search-_-Brand+General-_-PPC_google-_-Bealls&gclid=CLih2ZTP2K8CFYla7Aod4gNOCQ
Lori, I had never heard of Christopher and Banks. I went to their website and they also have plus size! Another good place for age appropriate plus size clothing is Catherines. They also have mail order.
Thank you so much. I will try them. Unfortunately, I cannot wear pants due to a medical issue so I am stuck with dresses/skirts. I have a closet full of jeans, pants, shorts that I can't wear. I ended up at Blair and National loungewear and tired of the look.
Bon Worth is another reasonably priced, has sales, stores and on-line shopping--and "age appropriate." My granddaughters wouldn't shop there for themselves:) Catherines, Christopher and Banks, CJBanks, Dress Barn and probably others are owned by same parent company.
I heard Paula Poundstone on Wait Wait don't Tell Me yesterday threatening to strike an apparel store with a cruise missile! A young salesman said, we have a lot of older women here looking for larger sizes, but we don't carry them.
I tend to live in the pull on scrubs with pockets not that drawstring mess. I find them comfy, easy care, press nicely, and I can wear them to go shopping, to get some walks in and general daily errands. I even keep a couple of pairs for dressy events..the dark blue or black ones and I dress them up with blouses, sweaters etc..and don't forget your jewelery! I do have some dressy slacks. I used to love to dress up in silks and linens and pumps etc..and still have some of those things around...but with life as it is it is not practical now. The only shops we have here that are not $$$$$$$$$ is Walmart or Kmart..and there is the Dress Barn etc but so many cater to the college and high school age lassies. However, sometimes Sears ( if there still are any around) had nice things.
Sure is easy to lose ourselves during this whole disease process...I mean with the laundry, pee and poop patrolling, doctor visits, errands that never end, who has the energy for all of this...just one more thing..but one day we will come out of the fog just like a hillbilly coming to town for the very first time and everything will be new, scary and maybe even fun.
brindle--Chicos carries some pant styles in a "short". I'm 5'3" and their length is perfect on me. Also, I buy some of their slacks that are supposed to be ankle pants and they are full-length. If you're not a regular Chicos shopper, don't be put off by the prices--they are always running sales and having special deals. I like some of their clothing--it doesn't scream "old lady".
Mimi--the scrubs are a great idea while one is in the caregiving mode. I used to joke that I needed a tool belt to schlep all the stuff around that my husband needed.
"one day we will come out of the fog just like a hillbilly coming to town for the very first time and everything will be new, scary and maybe even fun." I like this, Mimi. Something to smile about.
I just got a catalog form a place called SERENGETI. I have never ordered from them or know anyone who has ordered from the. There seems to be many outfits that would be for the (may I say "mature") group. I do think I will order a couple of tops and see what they are in real life. I have noticed that many of the women things are being sized down. Example... the shoulders are smaller. And, I can't stand my pants below my waist and I am high wasited...with broad shoulders from swimming so much when I was younger.
I do love Cold Water Creek things, but very expensive. I order through their outlet store which is a great savings and if I don't like it or it doesn't fit....I can just take it back to their mall store...saves on return postage.
Jeans here, too, Emily. DH and I used to joke we would be the first generation(s) (12 years age diff) that wore Levi's into our "golden years".
Back to topic: Dillard's is a popular local department store that carries a good selection of womens, petites and plus sizes. Not sure if just in TX, but they do have a web presence. Might be worth checking. Hope this helps.
My dtr is 4' 11' and around 180 lb. Try to find clothes for that one. She was happy to see capri pants return to the stores as they are about right . I'm a very senior citizen and have always worn jeans. I don't mind the low rise if they aren't too low as they don't have to go over the tummy we older ones get in spite of everything. I haven't had anything really new for years. My sister now in ALF has some very nice things she has given me as she no longer goes any place to wear them so they're new to me. Thank goodness we've always been about the same size. She was always able to find things to fit her at Penny's or Dillards.
flo39-- take a look at WomenWithin, mail-order. They have all sizes--regular; petite; Plus; Petite-plus. Prices are pretty good. Full range of wardrobe--jeans to office dressy; sweats to fashionable. Locally, I've had some luck at Fashion Bug--some styles in regular and Plus versions.
Vickie-I can walk to our local Bealls. Many is the time I have been in the store and everything I have on, including shoes and bag, are from the store. Their sales and coupons are fantastic. I even get my Kcups there.
i remember Kevin talking about Bealls. but never thought to go on-line until you mentioned it. Everything I ordered was on sale, plus an additional 20% off if ordered by tomorrow; and shipping was free! Thanks!
Marilyn, I use the slacks only not those tops..I use sweat shirts when foggy or cold and I might have pink slacks and an purple top or periwinkle slacks and a purple or pinkish top... when I had a long haired light colored cat I went with the light colors so I didin't look like a walking furball. I still have my black cat so the dark colors work well too. I lost Cookie on Good Friday to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy..she showed no signs of illness the whole time we knew she had this disease..and when she crashed it was the only time during the 17months we had her that she showed any signs of distress. She was a Tuxie.
As long as we are off-topic here (sure you don't wear your cats as a scarf or something) , I want to tell whoever it was (I don't remember who), I got the thunder shirt for my Sophia. We had a little bit of thunder last week and she was shaking like a leaf. Put the shirt on her...she walked over laid down and was fine. What a great thing that will be. She really seemed to like it.
Have you tried Lands End? They have a small section in Sears where you can try on for size, purchase if you like it, but certainly more choices in catalog or online.
I wonder, off topic here, if that Thunder skirt would work for my Ebonie, a black cat, that has this bad habit of licking her tummy until she gets a sore. I have had her to the vet and she been on Kenalog cream and an antibiotic and still...get it healed and take the collar off and in the blink of an eye she is at it again..frustrating. No I don't wear cat fur garments...now a mink jacket that was my mom's and is more than 50 years old is a classic and is still stylish..but no where to wear it.
Guess it was you Vickie that suggested I get one for my little Sophie. Great idea. I couldn't belive it... She was shaking like a leaf...put the shirt on...she calmed right down. If it was you who made the suggestion...thaks so much.
