DH has FTD, dx'd 4 years ago and is still mobile, strong altho his language skills have declined significaantly since hospitalization in August 2011 due to aspiration pneumonia. He has had 3 episodes of unexpected bowel incontinence without warning over the past 6-8 weeks. No warning and he did not even mention there was a problem. All 3 times we noticed he pooped in his pants when he went to the bathroom to pee. I am keeping him in his briefs and throwing them out when he has an accident since at this point it is more cost effective than putting him in pull-ups. I had him in pull-ups for 10 days with no accidents and decided since he was not consistently incontinent that it was too expensive to have him in pull-ups every day. Also he tore the pull-up off one day when he peed declaring that he didn't need that. I am planning on buying cheap briefs and keeping him in those until the bowel incontinence becomes more frequent.
Please advise what you have done in a similar situation. Any advice is welcome.
i also did this in the beginning but used the regular like hanes briefs that closed well around the leg, not boxers. and added a 'pad' into them at night for added urine extras. if thats all you can do it works pretty well. yes throw out soiled ones. what a mess to try to cleanup. if it becomes more frequent then you may want to have a bag of depends. they have come out with new depends called REAL FIT and and they are made almost like cotton underwear. very soft and much improved in texture..
My husband has bowel incontinence maybe an average of once a week, but it varies a lot. He will wear pullups if he seems to have some diarrhea--he tends to alternate between constipation and diarrhea. He has always worn boxers and he wouldn't even try briefs, but he agreed to try boxer briefs to reduce the mess of unexpected accidents and likes them ok. The only problem is that the fly overlapped too much, and he does use that to pee, so I cut one layer of the fly.
Thanks divvi and pam-at this point we're sticking with the regular briefs and tossing when necessary. divvi, since you hold the "crown" on these matters it's comforting to know your approach in the beginning was the same. Thanks for the input. Off to stock up on briefs....
I think we are starting to get to this phase of alternating constipation and maybe normal poopers...I have noted of late, more plugged up toilets...I think the poopers must be kind of large and hard and he flushes before letting things "soften up"..and he locks me out of the bathroom so....☹☹ Then starting yesterday about 4 in the afternoon,,it was up and back to the loo I can't count the times...asked questions, is the problem the urge to piddle or poop or both? NO answer...No not hard poop but I need prune juice..good lord!!! Then I noted some kind of stain on his slacks and shore nuf...it was you guessed it..so I best head to Walmart to see about some supplies I may be in need of in the days ahead...He had me really concerned about bowel obstruction or UTI..finally in the middle of the night..bingo..popped the poop..thank heaven!
