I like part when the heroine is at the end of her ropes, totally, and a parachute lands next to her. It has exactly what she needs and a note! My parachute today was a stand on the side of the road selling "Tree Ripened Oranges" from Florida (I presume). I'm in Montana and it is March. My LO has been repeatedly asking for oranges and I have totally not got the energy for a trip into a store. So a Parachute! I bought two bags. Made me smile...
I am assuming you are talking about Hunger Games? I haven't seen the movie or read the books. The whole plot seemed barbaric to me, perhaps I am wrong? But very glad you got your oranges :)
Actually the book is very good. When I heard about the movie, I bought the book and couldn't put it down - read it in 2 days :)
Abby, so happy you got your parachute! Those are wonderful moments in life. When something comes along, out of the blue, just when you need it.
On a very bad day, early on, when DH was throwing public rages, acting inappropriately, losing cognitive abilities by the day - in general, when I felt my life was falling apart - I was in a Home Depot trying to locate the correct screws for a scout project (something I had never had to do in the past -DH would have done it). The clerk popped opened one box and 100 small screws went flying everywhere. She then shrugged her shoulders and walked away to help another customer. I couldn't leave those screws on the floor where someone might slip on one, so I got down on my hands and knees to pick them up - which would have taken forever. I was seconds away from bawling right there on the floor of the Home Depot. Just then a wand passed through my field of vision and magically swept up all the screws. Another customer in the aisle had grabbed a magnetic stick device that I guess is used by builders for just this problem. Talk about a parachute! I felt like God had sent a guardian angel just when I needed him most :)
I read the first two books when they came out ... got bogged down with the third. I think the first one was great - second one seemed repetitive. Third one isn't really holding my interest. It's obviously written for a juvenile audience, but it is intriguing.
I am waiting for the crowds to die down too, before I go see it.
Yes, the story -- and for good reason! There's a message in that.
Yup, I am a juvenile at heart. I like fast moving plots, romance and some action. I have a ranch and battle stuff every day. Half ton livestock, wolves and coyotes (rarely), moose and bear (more rarely) and carry a side arm (okay, a little handgun from my Grandpas farm). And I am alone in the elements most of the time (that AD LO thing). Which is why I loved this Heroine! She is so like us, battling the battles, caring for companions and grateful for parachutes... Okay, I liked the movie.
I used to teach archery in a Parks & Rec program, so I am sure I will enjoy Katniss!
Some juvenile lit is great - have you read The Giver? One of my favorite books. I just thought with Hunger Games, the author sometimes seemed to be going for that stereotypical love triangle thing. More in the second book, and probably in the third, though I've not really encountered it yet.
