My LO just experienced multiple mini seizures. He lives in ALF. Was taken to the ER and admitted on Thurs.. After many test, this was his DX. Due to brain damage from this, he can't stand. He falls backward. The ALF won't take him back unless he can stand. I am hanging by a thread here. Everyone I talk to has a different view. One Dr. said put him in a nursing home another said send him to rehab. Another Dr. said the damage is probably permanet so rehab won't help. The admitting may release him tomorrow, Yes am confused. Any thoughts out there?

It's my opinion he shouldn't be moved anywhere until you have an agreement on what would be best for him and that should include input from a social worker at the hospital who knows what's available in the system and community. The hospital cannot legally release him unless someone is willing to care for him, and I would want a clearer picture than the one you have been given. What is available in the Community, what care facilities? The cost? Home help? Would your family doctor have any info. he could give you to help you make this decision? I believe that you have to consider your own position here, too: what you can do, cannot do, won't do. Don't allow anyone to railroad you here; you really are the most important person because you have the responsibility for his care AND FOR YOURS, and no one has the knowledge of what that ultimately might mean. Hang tough. Prayers going up for a good solution for you both.

Ocallie, I am so sorry to hear this and can only imagine how distraught you are. Mary75* has given you some excellent advice. Please do speak with the social service department. Plead your case. I know it is difficult, but sometimes you have to demand answers. You should not be getting so many different opinions in one facility. Make the doctors come together and give you an answer.

Many nursing homes also do rehab and restorative care. Social services can also help you decide where best to place him, if that is your wish. My heart goes out to you. When you are able, please give us an update. And make sure to take care of YOU! ((hugs))

maybe you can have them try the rehab. if it works to help stabilize him to prior seizures, wonderful. if it doesnt work it can buy you some time to work on finding the facility you like.
sorry to hear this ocallie. i hope you find whats best for you and him.

Ocallie, Lloyd used to fall over backwards on his bum 1-5 times every morning if he got up too quickly. I stopped his sleeping pills and he quit falling over. I think sleeping pills impaired him even more than he already was and that was why he fell in the mornings. Just sharing. He is at home with me so I adjust my sleep to his if I have to. If I am really exhausted, I have given him half a pill and it ain't been good. The last time I did that he had a seizure first thing when he woke up in the morning. So I am avoiding them now as well as all sedatives and anesthesia.

The last 2 weeks of this disease has been most difficult for both of us. The decision was made for us. DH was to go to rehab. Due to ins. problems, no facility in our town would accept him. After a 3 day search by the social worker, he was placed an hour away. I followed the transport and was horrified by the state of the facility. It was not a very nice place. I felt so sad that I had to leave him there. I started a search for something else. Out of the blue a received a call from a facility, in another town, only a half hour away. They said they would take him. I dropped everthing and immediately went to look at it. It is more than I could have hoped for. Now the wait for ins authorization. The okay came on Friday while I was visiting him. The new place sent transport to pick him up, and we were off. Tomorrow, due to the weekend, we will get all the financials taken care of. He will start his therapy. I feel such a sense of relief. Just to know he is safe. You just can't imagine. Thank you all for your very kind and helpful words. My friend says it's the guiding hand on my back, taking me through this. I think she is right.
