I read this reference somewhere here but cannot remember which thread.
I think you mentioned Jeff is at a Sunrise community. I know probably every city and town has a sunrise something, but wonder if he is at one of the big or corportate sunrise communities.
I just wanted to mention that my father, who is a brain cancer survivor, had his surgery and has had subsequent follow up treatment at Vanderbilt. This goes back several years. Whenever he and my mother go there, and it is maybe a couple of weeks each time, they stay at a Sunrise Assisted Living facility. It is called Brighton.
The reason I am writing this to you is that they expect the best and they have found it at that Sunrise. They, well, mostly my mother because my father does not talk about it much, praise it, citing the care and the environment.
Hi Abby-- Thanks, it is a Sunrise Senior Living community. When our Presbyterian church started grabbing up all the land surrounding the church proper (leading me to re-christen it Woods Imperial Presbyterian Church...although I must say, they've made good choices about community-beneficial uses,) one of the plots was designated for senior housing and subsequently leased to Sunrise who built the facility where Jeff now lives.
As everyone says, the facility is only as good as its staff, but it seems great. I've been impressed so far, whenever I've shown up. (no special attempts to impress me, as far as I can tell.) Many decade+ staffers, and always a warm, caring feeling about the place.
My second choice would have been a Somerford Place in Annapolis, but Sunrise is walkable for me, and 2 minutes by car.
We are only 2 days in, so I'm still quite apprehensive, and cautious about making any proclamations. But, so far so good. I am going twice/day, for as long as this seems to matter. Jeff thinks he still lives at home and I just went to the grocery store or something. The gerontologist who does visiting hours surprised us yesterday, when we were sitting in the enclosed courtyard rockers, and did a quick assessment. (Guerilla doctor attack, I called it.) Doing a bit of a cognitive assessment, he asked Jeff where he was...where is this place? Jeff looked vaguely annoyed and replied "on the front porch." Good answer.
edit: I did get him to shower when I went in this morning. He needs someone assertive to say "Jeff, shower time! Let's get your pants off!" And I think some of the younger caregivers there may not carry that authority from his pov.
