Great Article Joan. A few weeks ago I saw a show on TV where inmates took care of other inmates who were terminally ill. They were really caring and gentle with them.
I have also read of somewhat similar examples where troubled teens or adults are tasked with caring for animals, sometimes abused animals. And there is a similar response in that it elicits another side in them that you would not have known was there. Seems worthwhile to me to give someone whose life has become just a horrible legacy something humane and redemptive to do.
Fascinating article. I could not believe that the idea of releasing inmates with dementia into regular nursing homes was even considered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's all a caregiver would need--as if dealing with dementia in your LO isn't enough. I think the solution of training other inmates as caregivers is a win/win for everyone.
Yes I agree that this is a very redeeming thing that inmates are doing. We have to remember that just because they are locked up does not mean they are heartless and mean. Just that they made some bad choices. I think it is great that their inner feelings are coming thru to help others less fortunate. Maybe other inmates will take heed from their example.
