lets pray this is not feasible. our worst nightmare.
unfortunately all along i have said many times, how much improved my DH is after a treatment of potent antibiotics for uti. the difference is amazing but shortlived.
"In the study, mice injected with human brain tissue from Alzheimer's patients developed Alzheimer's disease"
It is virtually certain that no one will be withdrawing brain tissue from our spouse and injecting that brain tissue into anyone else. The article speaks to that:
"the transmission occurred under highly artificial conditions that a person would likely not experience".
I'll say. Just declining any offers to be injected with brain tissue should suffice.
It is an interesting finding because it suggests that injecting these mis-shapen proteins into any creatures brain will cause those proteins to build up plaque. That to me suggests a path in that it may be the protein itself and not a different undlying condition that causes the plaque.
When this study was first aired I cringed. All we need is people being afraid they would "catch" AD from our LOs. Mice modules are a poor indicator of any human response.
thats a good observation wolf:) from the article the main concern would be that it may suggest it can mimic yet another devastating brain disease jacobson crutzfied.. aka mad cow. which is transmissable as we found in england some years ago from eating proteins infected from the diseased animals meat. this led to the thinking that anything made with diseased animal byproducts could transmit the disease. and saliva, bodily fluids, blood etc. i think this is what we would be concerned with infected bodily fluids that would transmit. not just injected brain tissues. but if brain tissue is infected why wouldnt other bodily tissues.. unless its just the plaques that infect. think body organ transplants, blood donors, etc. from potential AD - well its food for thought, that causes indigestion at any rate!
it also stated as the findings are preliminary they are also looking into whether it can be transmissable under 'normal conditions. that will be interesting to follow
I have strong feelings about animal research which are probably best not to share here.
However, this topic is disturbing.
One example- H- really committed to causes and community- enthusiastically contributed to blood donor drives. Probably up until 3 years ago, and on a quarterly basis. He would come home with the "I gave today" sticker on his forehead.
Who knows Abby? We can only hope not. Jeff also donated regularly up until we enrolled him in a drug study (which made him ineligible for a while. I also have been a lifelong donor, but they'll rarely take it anymore now that they use very precise digital iron test machines.)
Technically, he is back to being eligible. I wouldn't take him to donate for many reasons, and this is just one more very scary one!
