My Paul sleeps like the dead -once he goes to sleep you can not wake him-you can push-pull-yell-roll him around and still he sleeps. Now how do I know this WELL -last night a few hours after he went to sleep-I went in to check on him and smelled -yeap poop-so I tried to wake him so he would let me clean him up.Nothing worked-do you know how hard it is to move a sleeping 200 lb man around enough to clean up poop and get clean depends back on-without getting the bed dirty in the meantime.HARD-VERY HARD- but I got it done and he never woke up and remembered none of it this morning. Have I said lately how I HATE THIS DISEASE!!!!!
I don't care what anyone says about "better or worse", "sickness and health", no spouse should have to do that job. And I completely agree with you -You have every right to HATE THIS DISEASE!
I know I should be glad that he is not worse in other areas of this disease but this part is soooooooooo hard to take ,I want MY husband-the one that could wipe his own BUTT. Hope you do not have to deal with this with your LO.
bak...you are a brave soul. Sorry you and others have to go through this. I am a coward and that will be my line in the sand and placement will be strongly considered if time ever comes.
bak, we have the opposite sleep problem here-we can't get him to stay asleep, no matter what we give him. I'm tired and frustrated that so far nothing works.
I am sure we are on the path to incontinence...DH sits on the toilet, announces "I pooped" when he's had a bowel movement and no longer knows how to wipe at all and doesn't flush the toilet. Not looking forward to depends.
LFL,my dh takes 100mg trazodone-750 mg depakote at bedtime-anything less and he does not sleep. But as I have said once he gets to sleep there is NO waking him till morning. I worry what I would do in case of fire etc.Guess just grap him by his feet and start dragging him out!! This bathroom stuff is driving me crazy but there is nothing to be done but DEAL with it the best I can with as little yelling as possible (notice i did not say NO yelling)somedays I am just not a nice person! JudithKB_hopefully you never come to that line in the sand!
bak, mine goes to the bathroom if I take him. He cannot talk anymore so during the day I have to watch for signs like grabbing his crotch, but I gotta get him there and wipe his butt. I always take him first thing in the morning and before he goes to bed. If he has an accident, I put Depends on him for a couple days. He was on 100mg Trazadone and 500mg Dapakote sprinkles and I stopped them because he was too far gone and would be incontinent. No, he does not sleep well so if I am exhausted, I give him half a trazadone. Seems to work. And he also is dead weight once he is asleep. He falls on that bed and whatever is left is mine to curl up in and sleep!
LindaMc-My dh would fall into bed too because he forgot how to get in and out of bed,I got a hospital bed (because he had fallen out a few times) and now he can just lay down one way so it is easier to get into and out of the bed. That is when I moved to the spare room-very tough to do after 45 years in the same bed.It worries me that he goes THAT dead asleep, but it is better than being up all night.
Julia...you are not alone. Like I said earlier...that is "the line in the sand". For one thing I could not lift, turn, or help my dh get up off the stool. I think I could handle the pee...but, not the poop.
My husband doesn't stay asleep on sleeping pills either. He gets up and wanders around - the other night fell down the stairs. Poop. Agh. I can finally help my husband wipe now without throwing up. Breathe thru your mouth, breathe thru your mouth. Ick! That is the nastiest part of this disease!!!
Shannon, good for you. while yes its the nastiest part of the disease, we find ourselves doing things we never thought possible and getting thru it in one peice. even through we thought it the impossible. we just have to remember they cant help themselves and we just do what we have to to help them and us get thru it. divvi
