    Is it from catherter site, where it is inserted? Does he have a temperature? If so call doctor. Before you do that, check if drainage is from under the foreskin. Push foreskin back and wash with warm soapy water. Rinse and then bring foreskin back into original position. If the odor and drainage clears up, do it again in a few hours. If there is swelling or redness around cath or foreskin still call MD.

    The foley was just changed on Wednesday....no fever he has been running 97.6 yesterday it was 99.1 so that's not what they call to be alarming....no foreskin it is coming from the catherter site...it is coming out of the sides of where the catheter site is. The only urine change is excessive urine output in 24 hrs had 1950 cc! not even drinking that much to have this amount..but lately the output has been great they the think he has diabetes insipidus.
    Bladder infection?..... It is definitely something going on and everytime I call hospice they seem uninterested unless he is running a fever or in pain.

    angelb: I know nothing about this type of thing. But, I think I would just tell a fiblet to Hospice and tell them his temp. is higher then what it really is. Then when they come you can tell them you have been giving him aspirin and putting cold clothes on his head and giving him lots of liquids in that is probably why his temp. has gone down.

    angelb, if anything i have to deal with constant uti and bladder /prostate infections most know here its ongoing for us. in your case, while under normal instances in a healthy adult 99 wouldnt be of too much concern but with a hospice patient with a catheter that is oozing a foul infected material it is of concern. a low grade temp which is considered anything over normal 98.6 is the body's way of dealing with infection. the temps will usually escalate with infection if untreated with antibiotics. if my hospice wasnt concerned over oozing foul smelling liquid i would be livid. sorry, but they are there and paid royally to help our spouses with any symptoms that could be of distress including most definately infections. you should insist they come out and take a sample of the stuff and check it at minimum. if its loaded with bacteria then a chosen antibiotic would be prescribed to clear it up. uti and any bladder infections are painful so even as a pallitive care call they should do something. i would consider firing a hospice that didnt heed my concerns. this is soley my opinion and some may not want to treat infections in late stages. i understand this. it would depend on what conditions and plan of care you have laid out in the beginning with your hospice doctor not the nurse.

    Hi Angelb;

    Why did they change cath? Was there drainage at that time? In either case call and insist that nurse come to see drainage. Do not lie, just tell her you need her to come and see what your concern is. The drainage and the increase in output of urine could be due to infection in bladder or kidneys and not diabetis insipidus. If the nurse resists nicely tell her that you need to speak to her supervisor, and if supervisor does not agree, ask to speak to director. Keep bumping it up until you have your concerns addressed.

    While there is a hesitation not to be too agressive in some treatments while in hospice comfort measures would include making sure that your loved one is pain free. Go gettum girl! If that doesn't work let me know and I will be their worst nightmate. lol

    I totally understand your concern angelb, my dh last Sunday my dh was up and walking in his shuffling, slow way. He was alert and good. Monday morning he was not acting right. By Tuesday morning he was not even saying the five words he can still say, he was not able to stand, or walk, he was choking on his own secretions, and just over all looking like he was taking a downward spiral. Oxygen, a suction maching, and transderm patches were ordered. Wed. morning he woke up looking better and being able to walk better than Monday. While getting him ready to put in the shower, he grabbed his penis because he had to urinate. Some got on the floor and it had blood in it. His urine had looked dark a few days earlier and smelled strong but the Hospice nurse did not think it was anything wrong. Neither did I. I just increased the fluids.... Well with blood that was streaking the urine I freaked out and called the nurse. She came out the next day, took a urine sample and found out he definitely had a large amount of blood in his urine and thought he had passed a kidney stone. Started him on antibiotics. Since he has been diagnosed with EOAD his body temp has gone down. He has become colder all the time. Come to find out this last week he has been running a temp but it was showing 98.4. Now my dh is finally getting back to what he was Sunday a week ago. It took a huge tole on him. Fight for your man. Make them listen or find another Hospice that will care about your dh and you. God has blessed your dh with a strong woman, don't let them beat you down while you have to take care of him. Hang in there girl....

    drainage from the cath is not normal, but brown drainage is Certainly not normal. You have been given some good advice. I hope that they have been over to check it out. The Cath itself has a small "balloon" at the end that is inflated with a needle (to keep it from sliding out). There is a poss that it has been inflated too large and is causing blood from the rubbing on the inside. But the foul odor is a give-away that there is some sort of infection cooking in there. It could be a fungcial or viral infection in which case it would take a while for the temp to become elevated. hope all is well with him now.
