At the risk of being tarred and feathered by this football worshipping nation, I have to confess that I am not a football fan. Never learned the game; don't want to; don't understand it; don't care. I always was, and still am, a baseball and basketball girl. Red Sox and Celtics. (I lived in New England my whole life, and 36 of those years were about 20 miles south of Boston)
However, Sid likes football, still understands all of its plays and intracacies, and is a fanatic Patriot's fan. He will be glued to the TV on Sunday, and I will know how the game is going by the expletives that I hear from the den. I find this fascinating - he can't remember what he does all day in Day Care. Nothing. By his own admission, he no longer has any short term memory. It goes in and out of his brain in one second. He watches TV programs and really has very little idea what is going on. I can leave the room for 3 minutes, come back, and ask what happened on the show, and he has no clue. So how is it that he can follow a football game, yell and scream about this play and that rule, and know exactly what is happening????
Just wondering - Are any of your spouses' similar to Sid in that regard?
No Joan, Dave is just the opposite. We have been die hard Packers fans all of our married life, but he can't follow a football game to save his life. He has no interest, and we've spent every Sunday for 36 years glued to football on TV. This disease is so strange, isn't it? And just for the record, no tar and feathering here! :)
DH has always loved football and still likes to watch it. However, if I walk in and ask who's playing or what the score is - he doesn't have a clue. So....don't think he's comprehending much of the game. We'll have it on Sunday because he'll sit and watch - and I'll catch some of it too. Yes, Diane, it's a strange disease.
DH and I will watch the ball game and I will probably have to explain some of it to DH. He used to know it all but now cannot follow from start to finish!
i dont care about the game either at this point, but will watch the puppy halftime.. grin DH was a die hard cowboys fan, and i will probably put the bowl on sunday and let him hear the noise. somewhere in there, he must know its football as he smiles alot. they seem to be able to pull on cue what was their interests and can associate memories of things they loved i guess.
DH can follow the game "in the moment" meaning while the teams are playing he can follow the game and know what plays have just happened. If you ask him who's playing and what the score is, he can't tell you. We'll have it on, I am preparing a super bowl meal (ribs, chicken, etc) and we will celebrate and have a good time. I'm not much of a football fan but if it makes him happy, then okay. Don't know how many opportunities I will have to do this in the future.
Dh will be watching the games also. But, I found out months ago when he was watching a sporting event on TV he really didn't know what was going on, but he would clap and make cheering sounds, etc. but when I came in the room and would ask what the score was he would get a blank look on his face. Then he would look at the TV and wait until the score came on the screen and tell me what it was with a look on his face like he knew all along what it was.
He watches alot of TV and anyone would think he was really enjoying what he is watching, but NOOOO he hasn't a clue what it is about. I have tested him in various ways to see if I was right. I would wait until about the middle of the movie and leave the room when something important was going to happen...then I would return in about 3 to 5 mins. and ask him a question....he didn't have a clue what I was asking about.
My husband watches the hockey games, use to be mostly quiet but now will be into it. But, 5 minutes at the most and he doesn't remember watching it. The same for football. We will be watching cause we are Patriot fans (remember he is from north of Boston). He will watch, cheer, yell at the ref, enjoy himself but forget it within minutes. But that is OK. He is enjoying himself and that is what counts. Luckily for me I enjoy hockey, football, baseball and soccer too.
Well, the game is over, and our team lost. The strange thing about it is that I always used to know what was going on by Sid's yelling, cheering, and/or swearing. He used to get very emotional and into the game.
This time, nothing. He watched every bit of it, knew exactly what was going on, but as with everything lately, he had a very flat affect. He smiled when the Patriots did something good. (Besides touchdowns and kicking for an extra point, I don't understand the other things that are cheer worthy, but he does.) He frowned when the Giants did something good. But there wasn't a peep out of him, except at the very end. I came into the den when there were 2 minutes left, and he told me that the Patirot's were going to lose.
I don't know exactly how to describe his demeanor lately, but it's as if he is always spaced out, even BEFORE he went on the drug patch. Brain blank.
My hubby enjoyed the game too and even explained some of the calls that were made..what a safety is, why a flag is put down etc...he knows the game and he really enjoyed it. Later when we were talking he asked what day it was. I said..think for a minute..he said I have been for 10 minutes..then I said well what did we see today? Football..who played he tells me NY and the New England team and who won and the score! But he didn't know it was Sunday. For as long as this has been going on about not knowing what day it is, I still am not used to it.
Help me out here. I told Sid to call me when the Puppy Bowl was on. He never did. This morning, he insists he never saw it. When was it on? Was it a commercial? That was the only thing I wanted to see.
Charlotte - Ditto. Any commercials I did see were indeed boring and stupid. I didn't see the Dorito baby. The doggie/bringing beer was cute, but it's not original. Been done many times many different ways.
Yesterday, I told Sid that I was going out this morning to get goodies for the guys - dominoes is at our house today. This morning, I told him I was going to Publix to get goodies, and he said - "I know. You told me that yesterday." ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? Can't remember anything, including the puppy bowl, but he remembered I was going to Publix. There is no rhyme or reason to this disease.
I didn't see it either. Maybe that was a local station decision.
Did anyone see that British singer flip off the audience? It is all over the internet..saw a picture of it..it was that black singer in Madonna's back up group or whatever..she had that apron with an M on it...gross.
I didn't think much of the game either..course I don't really care about football but I do get jazzed over a good play and there were a couple but when there was a fumble or something it went to one of those stupid commercials...I think the Chevy one going against Ford was the worst of them.Twinkies and all.
PS..No Twinkies at the virtual Valentine Party we are planning....other goodies are so much better...
