The other day I bought non-alcoholic beer (O'Doul's) and gave it to dh with his pizza last night and tonight. I had one too. Tastes just like the real deal and he had no clue and was a happy camper. And, I didn't have to answer the same question over and over again within seconds like I do when he drinks wine. Now, to find a non-alcoholic wine that tastes like the real deal instead of grape juice.
This O'Doul's is definitely going to be a staple on my grocery list from now on! :-)

mothert, glad you found out about the O'Doul's-I've been serving it to DH since his dx in 2008. There are several companies that make non-alcoholic beer-O'Doul's, Coors, Becks to name a few. They all taste like the real deal. I've had a couple of non-alcoholic wines but they don't taste the same. Sorry I can't give you some names.

Great news, Mothert. Don't forget, many dementia patients lose sense of smell and thus, their sense of taste is affected. He may not be able to tell the difference with non alcoholic wine either. I used to water down my husband's vodka (after dx) and he could not tell. He asked me once if he was drinking vodka or water, and I said vodka--never questioned it again.

It is funny with my dh. He was an avid beer lover before AD. Now, he always refuses, once in a while when offered will take one and enjoy it. It is like he has some "feeling" about it that it is not good for him. (though I think one is ok,)

As he has such peeing issues all night long, it is good too. I sure miss having a cool one with him...and when I have one, it is the real deal. ( :

just google non-alcoholic wines and you will find many choices. Then maybe you can find a label near you.

Buy a good bottle of wine, drink it yourself, and refill the bottle with grape juice and put a stopper in it. My husband's sense of taste is not like it was. I can't believe the things I can feed him that he used to hate and now he is ok with it.

This is more about taste buds than beer or wine. Gord never would eat any type of seafood. He wouldn't even try it. Several years into the disease, we went to a Chinese food buffet. He was still capable at that time of filling his own plate. He commented about how wonderful something he was eating was. I looked and almost fell off my chair. He was busy eating deep fried shrimp and he also had crab salad on his plate.

mine would never eat yogurt which he called 'clabbered milk'. disgusting to him. now he gets one of the fruit flavors daily right along meds:) the non alcoholic choices would be fabulous to sub early on.
    tastebuds go early.

DH will now eat anything and everything I fix for him....except my southern grits! And...he knows if I switch his cream sherry or even water it down!

My DH has become the sweetest, easy going guy. Whatever I say, he will agree. I cant believe this is the same man i have lived with and argued with 41 + years. No complaints out of him. He has always been very opinionated about everything. It really is wierd getting my own way all the time. im really NOT enjoying it.

jang, that is so funny. Lloyd hated shrimp, too. Then they had samples of shrimp fettucini one day at Publix and he ate it and liked it. I have been feeding him everything ever since - yogurt and clam chowder included!
