My husband is probally in a stage 6. He has lost his lower dentures. I have looked everywhere with no luck. My question is is it worth the
money and effort to replace them. He still eats everything well. Of course he has trouble chewing now with out his lower dentures.
He seems to be going down hill fairly rapidly. If he goes to a nh soon do they help him put them? Is the food in a nh soft enough that
he can get along without them? Do your loved ones still use them? I know noone can tell me to or not to buy new ones but just wondering
what your loved ones do and your thoughts if it were you. Thank you

grannyD, I am a dental assistant by profession & let me tell you that getting impressions for a denture is not fun (even for a healthy person). Also, unlike the upper denture that is kept in by the suction created by the roof of the mouth, the lower denture is dependent upon how much bone is under the lower gum. My DH stopped wearing his upper denture a few months ago & he won’t wear it anymore. While I’m sure it is easier to eat when you have a lower denture, if he isn’t having any issues eating I would not hurry to replace it. I can’t answer the question about the NH, but I can’t imagine that all the people who live NH’s have teeth, so I would think that they adjust their diet accordingly. Hope this helps a little.

like elaine i agree if you can modify his diet to accomodate the lack of dentures then go that route. once they lose one pair the other isnt far behind. and they tend to trade dentures in NH so maybe your DH will find a pair there. grin.. just kidding. they will accomodate his diet with a drs order if/when hes placed. maybe they will show up!

My husband is in a ALF and they have put his upper denture away. It was hard to put in, and he would bite you when trying. We had spent a lot of money pulling his teeth and then rebuilding his mouth with permanent dentures. I had them switched out to temporary when he was stage 6 because i was not able to clean them. I wish they would of been temporary originally since you can put them away when you are no longer able to use them. At this time his diet is now soft foods or foods that are cut up very small. I wouldn't suggest you get new ones, just adjust his diet.

My DH has had noteeth for years. The shape of the roof of his mouth precluded ann upper denture, and dentists said both are really needed folr use. He's been i the Hospital just recently and they have been providing what they call a "soft mechanical" diet. Regular foods, not pureed but not chewy or tough. Meatloaf, burger, fish, thin slice turkey with gravy--as oposed toswiss steak, a piece of chicken, etc. No salads like tossed. If he had his way their menu would in clude hot dogs, and pickled bologna.

It amazes me what people can eat with just gums - I have seen people that do not let no teeth stop them from eating almost anything. As for NH - getting lost or traded is common, even if their name is on them.

grannyD, I have had to take out Lloyd's upper plate and lower partial to clean them for over a year. BUT he seems to get them out at other times with no trouble at all!!! I have found his partial everywhere...on the steps, in his pocket. About a month ago, my 17-yr.old grandson carried them upstairs in a paper towel after finding them on the kitchen floor.
Charlotte, you are so right. Lloyd loves apple cinnamon oatmeal and the Great Value brand is even better than Quaker and less than a buck and a half a box.
When I had my teeth pulled and my upper put in, my daughter put chicken stuffed with cheese and bacon in the food processor and it was great so that can be an option, too. The processor just basically chews it for them ...same great taste.
