What are serotonin reuptake inhibitors and what are they used for?

  1.
    The "fancy" name for anti-depressants!
  2.
What Sandi said. Most of the newer types of anti-depressants from Prozac up to Lexapro are SSRIs. There are other families of anti-depressants that existed prior to Prozac and its kin which are still sometimes prescribed.
As the name implies, their basic function is to inhibit the reuptake (or elimination) of seratonin, so that it hangs around longer.
  3.
    Is Zoloft in this category?
  4.
Vickie: Yes. Zoloft is an SSRI. Put SSRI in the search field of Wikipedia and you can get a list of them.
