I found out something interesting today while attempting to plan a cruise for next summer with a couple of close friends. The travel insurance company my friends are using considers AD a mental illness and will not cover it. What this means is that if my DH needs to return to the geripsych unit for more medication adjustment and I need to cancel or interrupt the trip, they will not reimburse me. However, if he needs to go to a hospital for any other reason, that would be covered. Almost sounds like some kind of discrimination, doesn't it? I am so glad that I happened to mention to the travel agent that he has AD, and that she knew about this. She said the way she found out is that another travel agent in her office had to cancel a trip because her Dad had to be treated for AD, and the travel agent was not reimbursed by the insurance company.

After the holidays I need to do more research and see which companies allow AD. I know there are some, because I was reimbursed by one for a cancelled trip because of his last geripsych unit stay.

A travel agent recommended a company to me that offers cancel-for-any-reason insurance. I have bought it several time and never had to use it, but he said he had a client who used it and had a good experience. It is: www.travelsafe.com, but you need to make sure to choose the cancel for any reason option.
