May seem strange, but I hate DH and I being alone on Christmas Day. In the past, before AD, we always found someone without family to share our Christmas meal. Our priest and his wife have been so supportive of us this past year and was right by my side throughout the death of my son and since. Now, his wife had to fly to CO to be with her aged Mother - who is in the hospital, so he will be alone this Christmas. I decided to invite him to our house, thinking surely someone else had already done so. Well...just heard from him and he said he'd love it and would be here with bells on!

Now...to decide what to cook! It really doesn't matter - at least he and us will not be alone!

    Happy holidays everyone!

aww thats such good news vickie. so many of us spread across the country would cherish the idea of spending xmas with you! i am glad the priest has accepted and know you will cook something divine. :)
  2.
    Vickie:

Don't forget to give him some of your fruitcake. I guarantee he will return for every holiday and days in between.
  3.
Vickie that is so nice of you to think of the man. Pity no one else in the congregation did.
  4.
I know, bluedaze*. I couldn't believe it when I found out no one had.

I will offer fruitcake, Shirley! Some people aren't brave enough to even try it! LOL

divvi, I would love to cook for all of you! This is greatest spot to be when we need it and everyone feels like family - even more so than some family!
  5.
One problem I've seen for priests, ministers, etc. is that everyone assumes someone else has invited them for dinner, so no one does.
  6.
You are right, marsh. My Dad was a minister - I know!
  7.
I am so proud for you Vicki. It is nice to have someone to do for even if that is all we ever do. Just tonight I found out the family is going to my dh's stepmothers house for Christmas tomorrow and we were not even invited. I made it seem like I didn't mind but it really hurts. I would never do that to anyone. But anyway, cook to your hearts content, visit and enjoy the day...... Merry Christmas to you and yours....
  8.
Vickie, that is wonderful....I know you will have a wonderful time.

I have two out of town friends visiting for the holidays. They are ladies who lost their husbands to EOAD in the last few years. We met online over 10 years ago and are now closer than a lot of families.
  9.
Vickie--so glad this is happening. Tell us the full menu when you have time.
  10.
MarilyninMD, not completed yet, but so far:

Appetizer: Herbed Brie En Croute with Cabernet Merlot
    Salad: Pear, Walnut and Asparagus
Honey Baked Ham, Feta Potatoes - any veggie suggestions? Riesling Wine
Dessert: Brandy Tart with Brandy Sauce and Turtle Pie
    Coffee, tea or more wine......

I love cooking like this! Not exactly your traditional Christmas dinner.

MarilyninMD, you can run away to my house anytime! I understand the entire relative/ DH situation! On second thought, let's run away together like a nice wonderful island cruise......anyone want to join us?
  12.
Rosiek--make room for me-I can be packed in minutes!!
  13.
Isn't it sad that sometimes the holidays bring out the worst in people.
  14.
*bluedaze, I can't find the recipe topic to post the Feta Potato recipe.

V just put it in the easy favorite recipe category that's already nearby. Couldn't be too difficult if it's potatoes??
  15.
Oh Vickie that sounds so wonderful! Have a lovely visit!

We are here in Canada with my parents, travel was tricky but we made it. This computer is hard to use so forgive my mistakes.

Mary75* I will see you next week hopefully!

More later. What a whirlwind of emotions the holiday season is. God bless you all, Vickie I LOVE fruitcake.

Vickie, your potatoes sound like seconds.
Coco, I have your phone number and will phone sometime Boxing Day.
I've had a bad cold, but am getting better. I don't want to give it to you or your DH, so think it better to wait and see how I am before we set up a time to meet. FYI, almost everyone in Vancouver seems to have it; use your hand sanitizer big time. Glad you made the trip all right: good on you, mate.
  16.
RosieK--the island cruise sound divine! Ironically, travel is what the argument was over. Now that DH is in an ALF, I can travel a little for the first time in years. Sister-in-law does not want my brother to be the contact person for DH if I am away. She brought up the fact that DH is not a blood relative. I am flabbergasted, but am taking the high road and will soldier on. We don't pick our in-laws, do we!

Too late I'm sure, but shredded sauteed brussel sprouts are good with a slightly fancy menu, as are haricot vert green beans with slivered almonds...
  17.
brussel sprouts are the in veggie this year. I love them, one daughter hates them.
  18.
Aha! That's why Trader Joe's has these huge clusters of brussels sprouts! I hate them, but the kind I've been seeing are neat looking. I thought they used to come in plastic bags.
  19.
marilyninMD once you've roasted the little critters with garlic and lots of olive oil you just might like them.
