Because my dh has had difficulty eating/drinking regular food, I have begun pureeing almost everything he eats and sometimes use baby foods. I also use a thickener for his fluids. When I give him a suppository, dh generally has a very soft stool. Is this due to the puree?

Looking back to my own children as babies, their stools were soft on purees and became firmer when on solids.

brindle, my husband ate baby foods, pudding cups, and yogurt, and he did not have a soft stool. As a matter of fact, the colon's muscles stop working and enemas are necessary when suppositories stop working. As long as it isn't runny like water, it's okay.

i would think that if the whole diet is only pureed it would need some bulk aka foods that help with natural fibers to eliminate the loose stools.bananas rice applesauce whole wheat cereals, bran or rice flakes like for babies, pureed cauliflour veggies, may be helpful. you could still puree these if they are harder to get down. alot of the issues also can pertain to lactose intolerance to dairy if they are susceptible as well. i think pureed is ok but its what type of puree you are giving. some of the above with some bran or rice to bulk it up in the pureeing process. and especially veggies. you could get inventive and add a few tablesoons of crushed bran to an ice cream shake and reblend and it probably would go down ok. i know its a constant battle in these stages with finding the right combos. i am in the same boat as you brindle but DH can eat softer foods without pureed but i keep it very bland to avoid issues too. what a life for them... so sad.

Thanks. I stopped pureeing his oatmeal in the morning to see if that helps. Then began cutting his banana into slices instead of puree. He has such trouble swallowing/coughing and the puree seems to really help with this. The baby food meats are very high inprotein which I like. Then I puree the veggies he likes and canned fruits. Canned potatoes seem to puree really well and taste good too. DH doesn't care for rice but like the baby one with corn/rice. Has a nice corn taste.

This morning I noticed a sore big toe - maybe an ingrown nail (dh actually said ouch). Thought I had cut the nails so well and kept them ok but guess not. Then dh complained his jaw hurt as I was shaving him. Maybe it is his partials. I know it must really bother him to actually say something I can clearly understand. Well, I removed the partials and we shall see if that is the issue. I sure don't see any redness or swelling. I never did like guessing games!!!!!

Divvi, how old is your dh? Mine is 68 and this is the 10th yr.

Oh brindle-so young. My husband was showing symptoms that early too-but I didn't recognize what was going on. If we only knew then what we know now. That is the main reason I remain on this site.
