We had a relatively quiet dinner at son's house with only nine people, very quiet. DH having no idea what Thanksgiving even is, did well. We went to bed at the regular time. I woke up coughing as I have been for a week and decided to go to another room to sleep because DH was snoring and cuddling close. The next morning I thought it was odd that he was on my side of the bed when I woke him up. Later, when I went to make the bed, I discovered wet sheets, wet mattress. This is the first time he has wet the bed, soaked it through. Clean-up lasted all day. I tried to clean the stain, shopped for 'waterproof' mattress pad. The king size bed was still wet at bed time. This is one of those pillow top mattresses, very big, and expensive. Last night went upstairs to separate rooms and beds. I got up during the night, took him to the bathroom, heard him get up and go again. This morning another wet bed. It finally hit me over the head this is going to happen every night. I did buy depends yesterday, did not put them on him last night. I get it. If you do the same thing over and over expecting different results....definition of insanity. Now I need a truly waterproof cover for a king size bed 18 inches deep and a queen size bed. Where do I find them. Have looked on Amazon, the Alzheimer Store and I can't find what I need. Help. Where do I find the products I need?
Mary, I got my queen size one at either K-Mart or Walmart, around $39 and it's a very good one. I'm sure they had king too, because I also bought two twin-size for our twin bedroom- just in case! All the websites I checked charged for shipping, so I just went shopping locally and found them. We're not there yet, but I'm sure it is coming. Good luck to you.
Ever since I read your post about being "ready" with a waterproof mattress cover, I have wanted to ask you where you purchased it. I went online with K-Mart and they have many. Is yours a fitted one or one that envelops the entire mattress? Would it be possible for you to post the actual manufacturer's name? This is something that is bound to make life just a bit easier so I feel it is a very good investment and I want to be prepared. Thanks.
Shirley, sorry, I don't know the mfg. It is fitted and goes over the mattress, down the sides and underneath a ways. It does not cover the mattress completely - didn't want to do that - too hard to take off if needed to. But it fits my queen extremely well. That's on my mattress, then I have another fitted one - not waterproof over that, then my sheets. When/if incontinence starts, I will put the waterproof one on top of everything, with maybe smaller waterproof pads on top of that. Will just have to play it by ear, I guess. Good luck - we are good boy scouts - always prepared!
I bought my king size waterproff mattress pad at Walmart.com & had it shipped direct to the store. I like my fitted one because it is easy to remove. I don't have that problem yet, but a tip I heard here is to put the mattress pad on with the plastic side up & then it is possible to maybe just wipe it off instead of having to wash it everytime. Never had to do it so I don't know if that works.
When I had a similar incident years ago with my DH soaking the bed, I called our ChemDry carpet cleaning company and they came out immediately and steamed and steam cleaned the mattress. They used an extractor machine to remove the urine moisture...and the mattress was practically dry and smelled veryclean when they left. They sprayed a waterproof coating on it similar to Scotchguard which was to create a barrier to some moisture. I ordered two deep pocket waterproof pads from Overstock.com that fit my Kingsdown 18" mattress. We all learn by others experiences. I Scotchguarded his recliner that had leather arm rests and back trim and a fabric cushion. The ChemDry people sprayed the carpet in the bedroom that allowed spills and other stuff** to bead up and not soak in. It truly helped.
Once when we were vacationing and my dh had just recently been put on some new meds, he wet the bed at the resort we were staying at. This had never happened before and I was mortified. There was no protective anything on the mattress. I called and had the mattress exchanged - surely they must have a way of cleaning urine odors out of mattresses. The rest of our stay, I used a large plastic trash bag and towel under him. The meds were changed and it never happened again but you learn to take something with you - just in case - you don't want them soiling someone else's bed.
I use doggy clean-up spray which I buy at a big box pet store--it breaks down the urine so it doesn't smell. But it does leave whatever you are treating wetter, it doesn't solve the problem of getting it dry.
I use the first mattress cover listed here: http://protectivebedding.com/waterproofbedding/premium-mattress-covers.html It is nicer to sleep on than the ones with a plastic layer and seems to wash well. Free shipping today.
