you can draw as a widower on her soc sec but only til you turn 60years old and i think at a reduced rate of her reg amount. i dont know if it applies to disability payments but i would think not
or you can wait til you get your own at 67.
this info is posted under social security at their website.
When my DH passed I was allowed to draw widow/widower benefits starting at age 60. Since his SS was larger than mine I received his SS full payment minus 225 for the rest of my life. I had to wait till 65 to receive medicare benefits.
i am not for sure but i think its about 30% reduction off the original amount if you take it as widower at 60yrs. to example if their soc security is 1000dol and you decide to take as widow at 60 it could be reduced to 30% less (300dol) or about 700dol to you as widower. someone maybe jane? who knows more about this has more info if this is corect or if its changed.
moorsb you such a baby! My dh just received his first SSD check today! yippee. It is more than he made the last month he worked due to his serious decline. He is 58 as am I. This whole maze of disability, soc sec, private ins. etc has worn me down. I have a 2 1/2 inch folder full of paperwork and am not done but have had excellent help with the process.
grendelsma--It will get easier. I've been on SSD since 1984 and DH was on since Fall 1988. When he reached retirement age they automatically converted him over to regulr SS. Medicare starts about 2 years aftere SSD, usually.
grendelsma I found last year was harder than this year in a lot of ways. With all the paper work and all. This year has had it share of paper work. But not near as much. Also once you get a few forms filled out, the rest are really just a copy of the info you already have. I know last year I thought I can't keep this up. Like carosi says it will get easier.
